Really frustrating but it's only been a week. You could try persisting for a month because you'd then have enough data to have a better picture of how he'll do on it. Of course, you can always go back to Caninsulin now. You are Rom's caretaker. If I recall you made the change because you felt that the Caninsulin wasn't lasting long enough ... is that correct?

It hasn't even been a week yet!! I guess I was just expecting a miracle!! Caninsulin certainly wasn't consistently lasting long enough, and I have no desire to go back to it. I will give this a whirl for a good few months before I go back to the vet. I did get an agreement from her that if ProZinc didn't work, she would approach the RVC for advice about changing to Lantus, which is what I want really.

I agree - giving it a few months will tell you whether it will work for Rom. I don't think there are any "miracles" when dealing with FD, just easier to regulate kitties. Some of us have 'em and some of us don't. I also know that there are rigid rules in the UK about what insulins can be prescribed. Lantus works really well for many cats and is the first choice of most vets here in Canada. Teasel was started on Lantus but it didn't really work that well for him. He was bouncy, got stuck in high numbers ( aggravated by the depot effect), became insulin resistant and went into DKA after a 48 hour withdrawal of insulin in an attempt to restart him. After that harrowing time he was switched to ProZinc. I'm the only client in a very large vet practice that has her cat on ProZinc.

My purpose in telling Teasel's story isn't to deter you but only to give an example of how Lantus isn't always a "magic bullet" insulin - ECID! :cat:

Well, neither of my kitties are easy to regulate. Frankie is mostly regulated now on Lantus which is why I want Rom on it too, although it took nearly 18 months before seeing the numbers I currently am with Frankie.

Good morning, I am sitting here reading this as I was going to ask what is the most used (best ) insulin for cats. My Skylar is on Vetsulin and was doing well but now her numbers are getting higher and I am getting concerned. You said that Rom's AMPS was 378 and t4 was 410, what do you do in this situation? Would you up Rom's dose if it that high at his PMPS? We are new to this. Hope I am not intruding.

Yes, Frankie is doing really well on Lantus!

Hi Debbie,
The 'most used' insulin on this forum is Lantus/glargine. But we have a saying here that 'The best insulin is the one that works best for the cat'. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing in advance which insulin that will be ;).
Your kitty is fluctuating between yellow and blue numbers. Some folks SS's go through many colours (and some go through every colour)! Stability is no bad thing... Given that your kitty is only a month into this he's doing very well indeed. Really! :bighug:

Sue, it is 'early days' with the Prozinc, so it may yet work out for Rom. ...But it's good that your vet is willing to consider Lantus if the Prozinc isn't effective. And there is always Levemir of course...
But another option we have in the UK is Hypurin bovine PZI. It's very long lasting (has a longer duration than Lantus or Lev) and that long duration can work really well for some cats because of it's effect in levelling out BG numbers.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed that you see some better results soon... (((Hugs)))

He's on Felix As Good As It Looks Senior. According to your list it is 8% carbs. Or was last time I checked. I can't access the list from work.

Anyway, the rest of his day went like this:

+7 21.7 (391)
PMPS 18.4 (331)

Then he went out all night and refused to get off a high wall to be tested, so no night tests.

Is that licensed for animals or humans?
Not licensed for animals, Sue, but can be prescribed using 'cascade system'.

Some UK vets have prescribed it for cats because there used to be a veterinary PZI here that was discontinued. At that point cats' options were either to switch to Caninsulin/Vetsulin or use a 'human' insulin like Lantus, Lev or Hypurin PZI. Those vets who'd had experience of using PZI were more inclined to prescribe the human version of it.
It's worked really well for Bertie, but there are very few other people here using it at the moment. (Marlena is using it for Rocky. And Juliet (Dr Schrodinger) got her kitty into remission on it.) ..So there is not the 'community' of users that there is with other insulins here.
.

That's the problem. My vet is extremely reluctant to prescribe human insulins and always refers to the RVC, even though she can prescribe legally.
