AMPS this morning was 18.7 (337), so seems the 1 drop was not doing much, so I have increased to 0.05 units (half way up the zero line)

So, yesterday I saw my original vet as there are only two of them who can administer Teddy's chemo and one was off. I really like her but her diabetes knowledge is patchy to say the least. I had a pleasant surprise though. The other vet who put Rom on Lantus had put the link to his spreadsheet in the permanent notes and she had to call him to see how it worked and understand it. It seems she was scared of it and what I was doing. Once she understood, she was ecstatic and really impressed with how well Rom was doing. On to his eye.... it was so swollen she could not really see it. His whole cheek is swollen, so she thinks it could be a tooth abcess as his tooth is really bad under it. But it could be something simple like a grass seed. At the moment, she is treating the symptoms hoping the swelling will go down. If it doesn't then he will have to go under anaesthetic and be examined properly and they will do his teeth at the same time. Then came the shocker and I can't believe I missed this. He has lost 2kg!! He is a really big boned cat and doesn't appear any smaller but I had realised I could feel his backbone. I feel so bad but the vet said I have more than enough to cope with with two diabetics and a cancer kitty. She thinks it may be thyroid but has taken a blood test to be sure. Kidneys being checked too. She will phone with results today. He has been given painkillers, antibiotics and eye drops and I have to go back Thursday. She is hopeful that if it is tooth related, he will go into remission as he keeps teasing me with it.

Poor Rom. I hope the swelling goes down and it is just tooth related. I'm glad the vet was willing to learn. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

PMPS Rom was 13.0 (234) and +8 4.7 (85)

Update on Rom's blood results. Vet is still suspicious of a UTI but urine culture not back yet. Thyroid test was low, but again as he has lost so much weight lately, there is another test she can do where you do not get the result you expected. Now the bad news. He has stage 3 kidney disease!! I guess I need to do more research now on what foods are low in carbs and easy on the kidneys. Any ideas anyone? I feel so bad that I never picked this up earlier. How did it get to stage 3 before being picked up? If it wasn't for his eye, I would probably still be none the wiser. He has to go back to the vets tonight and will probably be kept in for fluids. I expect they will want to examine the eye under anaesthetic and do a dental at the same time. Vet is keen to learn how I dose him now too, seeing as they will have to carry on for me for a couple of cycles at least. Prayers please.:(

Hi Sue,

I'm so sorry about Rom's diagnosis, but I'm glad you have a vet that is willing to learn. Will they let you do fluids at home, once you get him more stable?

In case you haven't seen it, there is a great website all about caring for cats with kidney disease - felinecrf.org. She has food lists with low phosphorus foods so you can find ones that are low in both phosphorus and carbs, including a list for the UK!

Sending lots of vines and prayers for all your kitties and some :bighug: for you.

I'm sorry about the diagnosis. Don't beat yourself up. I think kidney disease is hard to pick up on. At least it is something that you can treat. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Fluids are usually given at the vets in the UK. But I did have a kidney cat before that I used to inject with fluids twice a day. I've checked the food list, unfortunately what Rom is currently eating is not on the list! Maybe I could use a phosphorous binder. Thanks for the prayers and hugs. We need every one of them.
