Hello,

Pickles was diagnosed mid-2020 at which point we started vetsulin and a low carb diet (FF pate and Young Again kibble). I’m only a couple of months he went into remission and has stayed there. In February of this year we moved, did a full home renovation and brought home a new baby. Needless to say, pickles was stressed. He started to get diarrhea and I thought it would go away once construction was done, but it has been over 2 months since construction ended and he still has it. Other than that he’s acting completely like himself. I just took him to the vet and the bloodwork and stool came back normal (including blood sugar #s). The doc recommended three things:
1. Change his food (he was talking wary of the young again, but I don’t know of any other dry food that’s low carb)
2. FortiFlora
3. metronidazole

I figure I’ll start with the fortiflora bc it seems like a lot of people here use it. Any other thoughts?

The other low-carb dry food are Dry Elsey's Clean Protein line that includes the original Chicken and Salmon and now had Duck, Rabbit and Turkey.

There is also Wysong's Epigen 90

I wouod try that and the FortiFlora before going to metronidazole.

Thank you!! Are these foods just as low carb as the YA? I worry about relapse if I switch him off YA.

Young Again and Dr. Elsey’s are quite similar, yes, Elsey’s is low carb. I have five kitties and they all beg for Elsey’s, which I feed mostly as snacks. I keep Pro-Pectalin (which contains no chemicals and comes in chicken flavor) and DiaGel on hand for persistent diarrhea when bloodwork and fecal sample are normal. Chewy is currently sold out, but both are available on Amazon. Prayers for Pickles’ continued remission.

I bought both Young Again (first) and right after Dr. Elsey's. Sister prefers Elsey's, and when I gave her some Young Again Zero over the weekend (to use it up) it gave her very loose poop.
Plus the Zero stinks so much.
I have decided to discontinue the Zero.
BTW, Fortiflora never worked for diarrhrea on my catss but S. Boulardii does. ECID.

I haven’t tried Young Again because a couple of mine don’t do well on pork. I feed a wet diet and use the kibble as snacks or treats, thrilled to have found a low-carb dry they think is a treat. I am very happy with Dr. Elsey’s. So far we have tried the salmon and the chicken. They love both. However, for kitties with a chicken allergy, every flavor of Dr. Elsey’s contains chicken as the second ingredient. Goodness, the things we learn taking care of our fur kids, lol!
