Hi,

This is just a short story to encourage people with diabetic cats, especially newly diagnosed.

Our cat was diagnosed at Christmas and we went through two months of worry, hassle and expense - especially for him being subjected to constant blood curves and tests.

After two months, we went with a different approach of diet - mainly raw meat and fish - and homeopathic remedies provided by the Irish vet on the net, Tom Farrington.

Within ten days, our cat went into remission. He’s looking great now, nearly four months on and insulin-free.

I’d be happy to provide advice to any other cat owners/minders who want to message me. It worries me greatly that some people give up on this illness and have their cats put down, although I understand how daunting it feels at first.

Don’t give up - I’m convinced this illness is absolutely diet-related and curable!

Simon.

Hi Simon, good to hear you've had success with a change in diet. I fed raw food too, but raw food by itself may not contain all the supplements needed by a cat - you do want to feed a complete meal. For some cats, a change in diet is enough, but depending on the circumstances, and Each Cat is Different, insulin may also be needed to give the pancreas enough of a break to heal. Or in some more complicated cases, like my girl who had a chronic secondary endocrine condition that caused her diabetes, the raw food and insulin helped to get her regulated and live a relatively happy life with diabetes.

We provide lots of advice and support to new members daily, and between all of us, years of experience ind how to treat feline diabetes. It's good to hear success stories.

Hi there,

Yes, we were lucky in that we didn’t have any complications except a urinary tract infection early on, otherwise just diabetes.

I should have mentioned above that we do feed a supplement provided by Tom Farrington, as well as the homeopathic course which he finished three months ago now.

The point is that, for us, the results were so dramatic, in ten days I caught him slipping into remission and stopped the insulin.

And on diet, we’re not that strict - he gets plenty of treats, just no dry food. No junk carbs!

I’m glad your girl was able to improve and live relatively happy, that’s great to hear,

Simon.

Over the years, we've seen a number of cats go into remission with a change to a low carb diet. It's not that unusual. Congrats of getting your kitty into remission.
It was unusual to all the other vets we encountered! They couldn’t believe we got our cat off insulin and were completely sceptical about our approach. Their default approach was to keep him on (higher doses) of insulin and expensive diabetic cat food.

Sounds like a scam doesnt it? smh
Yeah, the thing is I don’t necessarily think vets are consciously scamming. Not most of them. They’re just operating in a different paradigm where they don’t believe feline diabetes is curable and they keep prescribing commercial cat food and insulin. Medics often aren’t that good on the causes of things.

No, I doubt very much if there’s any scamming as such involved. The sad thing is that many/most vets are taught only the basics of FD and so go by the book and “treat” according to the textbooks as opposed to considering how it might have developed and how it could be better managed. Then there’s the pet food manufacturers who get a lot of their business from vets, and quite likely the vets get a commission. We hear stories of some vets who seem horrified if an owner doesn’t want to feed an expensive prescription diet - they’ve been brainwashed I think to believe that they must be better than anything else.

A raw food diet is probably optimum for cats but as Wendy says, it does have to be supplemented. I don’t know what’s in the one you mention - it may be similar to one called Felini which is available from Zooplus.

Hopefully your cat will be insulin-free for ever but technically, you should continue to check bg every few weeks to make sure that this remains the case. Good luck!

Yes, I agree with all that.
Commission or no commission.
The supplement I give is all natural ingredients as Tom’s a natural vet. I just add a little bit in a powder every couple of days.
As for bg, I don’t bother testing as he’s not drinking very much or showing any diabetic signs. He’s looking great.
