Hi everyone,

I'm a Lantus Land poster wondering if anyone has had a similar situation. After almost three months OTJ, Johnny needed a bit of insulin tonight. We realized yesterday, during a spot check, that his numbers were way higher than we imagined. He was 260 yesterday a.m. and 325 tonight. We originally thought some leaf-munching might be a factor, but 24 hours later, we realized that he needed some more support. He was diagnosed in May, so he was on insulin for around 3.5 months. He raced down the scale and hovered between needing a drop here and there and being fine on his own.

Anybody else have a similar experience? Was there an infection to blame or just a simple relapse? We think he should probably have a dental (never had one) and will set that up asap. Otherwise, wondering if bloodwork or other tests should be done. His diet hasn't changed since being OTJ (2% FF chopped grill).

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Oh yeah! Make arrangements with the vet for a checkup, b/w and urine, so you can rule out non FD reasons.
I think quite often, owners may be very cautious and jump to the conslusion of relapse when there are a few high numbers. If you think about it, Mr. Johnny could very well have had higher numbers in the past when he was sick but you were not home testing. He could have some infection that a bout of a/b can clear up.

Dental is a BIG one! For sure, if he's never had one, it would be a great idea to get him a mouthful of healthy pearly whites.
My Shadoe's teeth did not look all that bad, but since she had never been, I took her in for one and sure enough, there were 4 iffy teeth, and one of them was very bad and had to be extracted. Her BG and dose needs plummeted. If nothing else, it will be good for him and also you to know that his mouth is not he source of the problem.

Pats for big Johnny from me, and don't worry. If he needs a bit of help for a short time, then that's what he needs.
