Info RECENT REMISSIONS?

Hello! First post and wondering if anyone else has had this happen. Kammy the cat has been a diabetic for one year, had a dental, and had been on wet food only since. She has not needed insulin since her dental which is new for her. Wondering how many other people have had cats that go into remission after one year and how long they usually last.

1. Date of Diagnosis - 2/2024
2. Specific PZI (ProZinc, Idexx, BCP, compounded, etc.) - ProZinc, 3 units twice daily
3. When did you switch from dry to wet food - 2 weeks ago
4. If you used any other insulin besides the PZI, which one and how long were you on it - none
5. Date of last shot and average BG since then - right after dental two weeks ago and then nothing! BG running between 100-120
Hello and Welcome! Do you have a spreadsheet documenting Kammy’s progress (and remission?) It’s wonderful to hear that you are testing her BG. Normal BG for a cat is approximately 50 to a max of 120 (with the 110s being not common) and a cat in remission would spend most of its time in in green numbers (50-99). Kammy does sound like she’s really doing very well. The inflammation of a problem tooth and/or teeth can definitely contribute to insulin resistance and therefore diabetes. In addition, if you made the switch to low carb wet food as her only food, then that would definitely lower her blood glucose as well. Those two things together have apparently helped Kammy’s BG numbers to go down a lot. That’s great news. Please keep testing Kammy for a while to makes sure her numbers don’t start to increase. I actually hope they will improve and get into green numbers where she should be. If they do, you would want to restart insulin at a very tiny dose in order to get her fully into a long-lasting remission.

Take a look at Calvin, one of our ProZinc kitties who recently went into remission. Look back a few weeks and see. She was testing him a lot (in fact she was originally using a Libre sensor) and he was almost always in green. She’s testing less often now, but still testing and he’s pretty much in green numbers he hasn’t had insulin for quite a while.

1. Diagnosed on 8 January 2025
2. ProZinc
3. Switched to low carb wet food upon diagnosis
4. Used caninsulin/vetsulin for the first 2 weeks (with poor results)
5. Date of last insulin shot was 8 March 2025 and BG has averaged around 90 since then

Started him on Rapamycin today (2mg weekly) for his HCM so the remission may not last!
