Good morning...

We rec'd the Lantus from the good folks at DCIN. I am unsure when I should start BooBoo. I know I will have to do a full curve on her and I kind of need a break from kitty stress right now between BooBoo and Clayzie (crystals) been goin' kind of crazy! Anyway, I don't start school for another 2 weeks, but I would like to get her changed over if you all think I need to soon. Anyday but today preferably! My mother is taking our 3 year old today and would like to kick it with the Hubby without constantly talking about the cats which is all I've been doing lately he says, lol!!! Anyway, looking forward to hearing ur guys' advise here... =-) oh and very important, do I give 1u of Lantus since I am giving 1u of Humulin right now?

Re: Rec'd new Lantus

then start first thing tomorrow with a dose of .5u I hope you read all the stickies and stuff on how to handle lantus. no curve needed yet. get spot checks with lantus to start off. someone will tell you when to do these. we need to see what nadir will be. (lowest point) lantus is dosed on this number and not he PS numbers. and you cannot keep changing dose . stick with the .5 for 10-12 cycles unless numbers say differently. I am sure this has been posted somewhere in your condo or someone elses. cannot remember

Re: Rec'd new Lantus

Couldn't remember either, but thought it might have been posted elsewhere too! Just to make it easy, now that i actually have the Lantus, just thought I'd post a new topic to get advise. I can start tom with .5 then. My hubby will be happy that he won't have to be here to hear me talk about it all day, lol! I appreciate ur help... =-) btw, she seems to be doing great now too with the diet change, and even kinda smooth it seems on the Humulin too, but I am supposing that with the Lantus, I won't be seeing those higher #'s at the +12 marks, right?

oh and, I have started reading and will continue to read EVERYTHING I can about the Lantus. I am big on research!!!

Re: Rec'd new Lantus

The nadir for Lantus should be somewhere between +6 and +8 some kitties get a longer "surf" time on it than others, but no you shouldn't see such high numbers once her shed is built up. She may run a little high until then. The big thing with Lantus as opposed to Humulin is that it works off a shed that builds up in their bodies. And you are going to want to try to hold as close as possible to a 12-12 shot schedule. It likes consistancy.

But starting with .5 is nice and low, hold it for 10 cycles or 5 days.

Re: Rec'd new Lantus

Cool, thanx! I always try to keep to that 12/12 schedule and so far I have been able to. 9am and9pm are working out great for me!

Re: Rec'd new Lantus

Just tested BooBoo for ketones and the color was in between o and 5mg/dl. Could it be because of the higher #'s she is getting toward the +11, +12's? If so looks like we got that Lantus right in time! Maybe I should start her tonight at 9pm. Or should I just stick with 9 am tomorrow? Or should I test after the peak of the Humulin later today and see where we are at? Ketones have previously been negative...

if you can start her tonight, I would. better sooner than later. add water to food to help flush ketones.. test again cause sometimes if you wait just a tad longer that supposed to on count, it will turn colors on ya

Immediately it looked negative, then started to turn that light pink shade, so maybe it was just changing colors... thanx for the info on that one! I will start her tonight then. U think at 9pm, at her pm shot time?

unless you plan on changing times. I have not followed SS ( only colors and numbers to me, sorry). If N out of system, I would guess you can start earlier but wait for more experienced to chime in here. cause I am not sure

Stephanie, you can also start posting on Lantus for more ideas about a starting dose. If you post there with your daily numbers, they will help guide you with your new insulin. Everyone there uses Lantus and they have seen lots of different scenerios. They will be thrilled that you already have a spreadsheet and are hometesting and feeding lo carb.

Love Dian's idea about watering the food for the ketones. That should really help.

Booboo is great cause so far she'll eat any of the wet food I give her and I put extra water in her food too...

When reading the keytone strips, you have to read at exactly the time it says on the
instructions. Anything that happens after that can be ignored.
