Hi,

It has been ages since I have been on here. I have been struggling for what appears to be an eternity now with multiple health issues. Until about 3 days ago, typing was virtually impossible. Even now, I have to limit it to 5 to 10 minutes a day or less. So, I am going to be brief.

I took a fall 3/09, got seriously hurt. I recovered and then believe I got H1N1 and could barely breathe for weeks. I recovered from that but it caused massive pain from the "asthma-like" reaction. My ribs are still affected. In June of 09, my pain returned in the hip and progressed to my feet and I developed plantar fasciitis. I have been through multiple injections into the spine, one in the hip and shoulder, a couple in the ischial bursa. This year, I thought I was better and then I developed knee pain, patellarfemoral tracking disorder. I became fully housebound (not exaggerating) except medical appts. Even that was nearly impossible. I also had a small wreck in late July. I finally found a doctor that diagnosed a little better and has been treating using a technique called Graston, kinesio taping, and a variety of stretches/exercises, and massage techniques. I was able to walk 20 minutes out of the house today, which was a great improvement and am starting to be able to lift mugs again.

Enough said. I actually got on to ask a question about Simmy. Simmy started struggling with vomiting, mostly hair and water, months ago. I started feeding him in small increments and this helped. It took a bit, but the vomiting is basically under control. The problem is he is constantly wanting food. No excessive thirst, no excessive urinating. I am going to start BG testing again, but it normal at last check. No weird stools.

My question is: does anyone have any suggestions on food for pancreatitis? I think it might be that and that he got accustomed to small meals. But I am afraid to feed large amounts. I don't want the vomiting to start again. Anyway, if you have specific questions, just shoot and I will try to respond or have someone in the house do so. I need affordable suggestions on food. I figured this was a good place to go for info on that.

Thanks in advance,
Cheryl and Simmy

Always hungry does not sound like pancreatitis to me. For both of mine, they do not eat at all and because of the pain, Shadoe sits often in a meatloaf position.
Neither have vomited at those times at all.
I would think instead of thinking about the foods, you may want to see a vet for a once-over and rule out a few problems, and maybe pinpoint the cause or causes of the problem. Blood tests, including fPLI, to check for p-itis, and check urine as well with C&S to check for infections would be a good start.
I am glad you will do some home testing because I am not sure if excess thirst and urination is seen for all FD.
If tests show Simmy does have p-itis, you can give fluids at home yourself and also pain meds to clear up that problem, but it's best to know for sure what the problem could be.
For foods, if you could advise what you are feeding now, the amounts, and frequency, it would help others to comment.

Hi Cheryl,
I'm so sorry you are going through all this. It sounds so insurmountable. I dont have any advice for Simmy I'm hoping bumping up your thread will bring more eyes.

Please know I'm keeping you in my prayers.

Whenever there is a sudden change in behavior, such as vomiting, you should take the cat to the vet to rule out a medical cause.

There are a multitude of things which can cause that and no way we can begin to guess over the internet.

I also think you need to get him to the vet for a check up. But I am inclined to suggest you get his thyroid checked. Some of the symptoms sound like hyper-thyroid to me. Let us know how he is please.

Hi guys,

Well, lots of responses. I will try to add some information. I should have been more clear. Simmy rarely vomits and when he does now, it is usually a hairball. He has confirmed pancreatitis and always ate when he had this. In addition, he never lost weight at any time regardless of diet (canned Friskies). He has been in remission for some time. I should have mentioned that although he is asking for food, it doesn't amount to more than he ate when it was spread across the day allowed for grazing. It almost seems like Pavlov's response in that he will go to the kitchen when the refrigerator opens. I asked about pancreatitis diets because I always thought it was a good idea for him.

Hyperthyroidism is an interesting idea. I suffered from Graves' (hyperthyroidism and autoimmune disease). I doubt this is what it is because his appetite isn't ravenous and his weight is not low along with many other common symptoms. I would love to see free T4 and free T3 levels and a TSH though along with a couple of other tests for that in cats. I agree with the "go to the vet" advice. Right now, it is a major issue to just pay rent and eat. He isn't in horrible shape. Like I said, I should have been more clear. I should put my IGive information on here although it is on the blog for people who followed Simmy's case. As the holidays approach, IGive is a great idea period. But for now, I would love some ideas on food changes.

Thanks for the food for thought.

Eating Friskies 1 1/2 to 2 cans a day. For Simmy, that is not more than he ate. He just wants to be fed across the whole day.

Thanks,
Cheryl and Simmy too

Lower fat foods - go to Binky's page on the canned foods, cross out the higher carb ones, then go with the higher protein, lower fat (usually not fish).

Please consult with a vet before trying this one:
Consider picking up some digestive enzymes to help digest food, should the pancreas be on strike. From one product on iHerb.com Pancreatin:
"Pancreatin is a preparation of porcine pancreatic enzymes. Pancreatin naturally contains protease (protein digesting), amylase (carbohydrate digesting), and lipase (fat digesting) enzymes." Note that the acid in the stomach may denature (inactivate) some of these, but before that happened, they might assist with digestion.

Thank you for the response. I appreciated that. Don't worry. I won't do anything rash or stupid. I know better.

Thanks to everyone who wrote here about my struggles as well.

Bye,
Cheryl/Simmy
