Re: Pseudonomas aeruginosa

I don't have experience with it, but the little bit of research I did on the infection sounds like it can be very hard to get rid of since not many antibiotics work against it.

I would just be very diligent with dosing the antibiotic and don't be afraid to try a couple different kinds in an effort to get rid of it. Good luck and I hope your kitty gets to feeling better soon!

Re: Pseudonomas aeruginosa

Hi Alan,
I'm no expert in vet medicine at all. But pseudomonas in kids is oftentimes one of those bacteria that occurs in kids that are immune compromised or are chronically ill with some other illness. we often see it in kids who have tracheotomies for years - in their sputum. And it's one of those bacteria that can be seen in elderly that are ill and in nursing homes. Does your cat have anything else going on?

It can be something that is difficult to get rid of. It can also colonize itself - if that's the case - then it sometimes isn't treated. but if this is an acute case - than of course treatment is necessary.

Again - I'm used to working in an ICU so kids with it require IV antibiotics for this. I guess if this were my kitty I would keep a close eye on how well yours is improving daily. How well she's eating, peeing and whether her respiratory status is improving. Sometimes the oral antibiotics only partially treat the bacteria or you may well need an extended course of treatment.

I don't know if any of this helps you but it might open up some ideas for you. I hope it gave you some help. And I hope your kitty is soon well!

Re: Pseudonomas aeruginosa

Thanks for the replys its only been a few days on the new antibiotic. The culture tests showed 3 antibiotics as being effective.
her breathing is very laboured so we have to give her low doses of cortisone. She eats OK.

Its a waiting game. I think even if she gets through it she will have permanent lung damage.

Re: Pseudonomas aeruginosa

Just an update. Is nice to be able to write something and to get support from other cat lovers. Our cat improved a little in terms of her breathing but the condition remains. She was on quite powerful antibiotics.
The downside is her urea levels went up and she lost lots of weight. She has had three lots of fluids intravenously and we are hand feeding her with a special prescription diet.
She eats very little but we have got her weight up abit.

The fluids have helped but I think her kidneys are damaged. She is not in any pain as far as we can tell. She sits and walks a little. Sleeps lots. We just have to stay with it.
