Just wondering how long prozinc vial will last? I've had mine for about 6wks and beginning to wonder if prozinc is being less effective because of losing its potency.

THanks!

Lori,
Is there an exp date on the vial or the box it came in? I am not sure about Prozinc, but the last vial of PZI I bought in July was good until December.

The manufacturer says:
How long can a PROZINC vial be used after it is opened?
Although product literature or labels for other insulin products advocate replacing insulin vials every month, there are no special requirements to periodically replace PROZINC once the bottle has been punctured under normal use conditions. PROZINC is a suspension and once mixed has a whitish cloudy appearance. Of course, if discoloration or other abnormal appearances are observed, indicating contamination within the vial, it should be discarded. Loss of insulin activity in the bottle should always be considered whenever clinical symptoms or signs recur, regardless of the amount of insulin in the bottle.4

I've been using the same bottle of Prozinc since March 8th, and haven't had any problems with its effectiveness. Motska is on such a small dose (.3 to .4 u twice per day) that we're only 1/2 way through the bottle. As long as it's sterile (the needle doesn't ever touch anything else before inserting into the vial), then in theory, you should still be fine for quite a while.

I will say this, though.... When it does come time to start a new vial, I'll be doing it on a day when I am at home so that I can keep an eye on her and test her every few hours -- just in case.
