Problem with One Touch Ultra Mini meter? Update

I wanted to switch from the One Touch Ultra Mini meter to the Walgreen's True Result because the test strips are less expensive . (The True Result meter was free and I had been keeping it for back up but hadn't used it yet.)

On April 29 I tested Gracie with both meters at the same time and got 296 on the One Touch and 176 on the True Result. The difference concerned me and I ended up buying another True Result meter today because the testing solution that came with the free meter had already expired and the store doesn't sell it separately. The free True Result meter was 45 with the testing solution, and the new meter was 49. Maybe this was a mistake, but then I tried using the same solution in the One Touch and got a reading of code "Hi" which the booklet describes as over 600!

Tonight before her evening shot she tested at 291 on the One Touch and 164 on the True Result.

I've been searching on the internet to see if people have had very high/inaccurate results with the One Touch and found quite a few reports of this happening to other (human) diabetics.

I was wondering if anyone here has had problems with either the One Touch Ultra Mini or Walgreen's True Result? I plan to take Gracie and her two different meters to the vet so that we can compare the results with the meter (specifically for animals) that they use in the office.

(Please don't check the spreadsheet because it isn't up to date. I've been keeping a notebook with Gracie's numbers, and I haven't been doing tight regulation.)

Update on May 3: Gracie went to the vet this afternoon and here are the blood glucose readings taken with 3 meters at the same time:
*vet's AlphaTrak: 286
*One Touch Ultra Mini: 289
*Walgreen's True Result: 150
Our vet also took a blood sample to send to the lab and the results should be back tomorrow.

Thank you for your help!

Re: Problem with One Touch Ultra Mini meter?

I'm a type 1 diabetic using the One Touch Ultra and mave the One Touch Mini as my back up. The Ultra readings seem consistent with how I feel - hypos etc - and the A1C readings I get each quarter and the Mini gives consistent readings within about 5% of each other. That's not to say that they are all OK. Comparing with the vets glucometer is a good idea.

Re: Problem with One Touch Ultra Mini meter?

yes, take the meters in and compare, that's what i did with mine, and my vet was happy to see that my meter was 0.6 lower then the vets. his helper argued with me that no human meter is even close to the right numbers..... and i proved her wrong that day! :-D

Re: Problem with One Touch Ultra Mini meter?

I have compared my OneTouch Ultra to my vet's glucometer on three occasions, twice of those with the same blood drop, and they have always been very very close, like within 8 points. I love my OneTouch.

Re: Problem with One Touch Ultra Mini meter?

You cannot use True Result test solution with a One Touch meter. Each meter brand has their own test solution. I am a human diabetic and have been using One Touch meters for 16 years. They consistently score high on Consumer Reports and other testing sites. You should have your vet compare your meter readings to a lab run blood sample, not another meter.

Although the latest Consumer Reports ratings gave the True Result line good marks, many of us have had problem w/ them in the past and don't use them.

If you are looking for a meter w/ less expensive strips, the Relion meters from Walmart are very popular. They are made by Arkray and you can get the strips for them even cheaper online at ADW or just get the meter there as well. If you buy 5 boxes at ADW the Arkray Vital (Relion Ultima) strips are only $11/50, the Arkray Glucocard 01 (Relion Comfirm or Micro) strips are $14/50.

I think the general consensus is to stay away from anything with "True" or "Tru" in the name... ie. the TRUEtrack, which is similar to the TRUEresult, and along with those, the Freestyle Lite (aka. the heartbreaker). They all read notoriously low and as you can see your One Touch was extremely close to the vet's reading.

This is just why I hate the tru meter - I too got one from Walgreen's and had nothing but problems. I returned it.

Take a look at Maui's ss and you will see where I tested her with tru and OTU and the crazy differences in BG's that I got, look something like yours.

Dump the tru meter and either stick with the OTU or if you want inexpensive AND reliable - get the walmart relion brand. I also like the Bayer Contour, I think the strips might be comparable to OTU, however, you don't have to code the meter and it takes less blood than OTU.
