Possible for protein to increase BG?

Has anyone ever noticed that pure protein (venison, beef, chicken...) raises their cats blood sugar? I'm starting to wonder... I should keep track of when I give it to him.

Good question. It is possible, most definitely, but variable in how much (if any), like Wendy said. Even fat can raise BG, usually when in larger amounts. So what Janet said is correct, even though it's not the way we usually think by concentrating on carbs so much!

Hi! So, Pearl does great on most proteins, but she has problems with fishes. Fishes raise her BG and just in general cause inflammatory response (she has IBD). If your cat has IBD, then yes whatever protein your kitty reacts to can raise the BG.

Interesting! I will definitely keep track of which type of protein he is eating! I never thought about that. As far as IBD, I don’t know. I have noticed he seems to be constipated all the time. He poops, it’s just very little for as big as he is.
