Hello, My male cat named Kitty (main coon) has been diagnosed with diabetes back in May.

I have no idea how old he is (at least 10 that I know of) because I found him outside starving after a neighbor had moved away.
The vet put him on 2 units of Levemir twice a day. I changed his food to low carb and have been trying multiple types such as Tiki cat, Fancy Feast Classic, and Friskies Pate. Kitty has lost a lot of weight and muscle mass the poor cat really is skin, bones and fur. There are no other issues other than diabetes but I am having trouble getting the poor thing regulated.

Since the cat was losing sooo much weight I bought the contour next gen test meter yesterday so I can see what is really happening. His sugar is always high even with low carb food! And this is what I have so far. 8am before food and shot 476 gave shot and friskies pate tested again at 10:30am he was at 493 tested again at 12:45 pm 471 tested again at 2:56 and he is at 556! Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome!

Im very happy you’re home testing. It’s the only way to really get your cat regulated. It can take some time, but he’ll gain weigh back once his diabetes is under control.

Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help. It would be very helpful if you could set a spreadsheet up so we can see the data you gather and give you dosing advice. We can have a member help you if needed.

With a diabetic cat you need:
  • A low carb wet diet that is 10% carbs or under. Most of us use around 4-7% carbs, which you’re already doing
  • A suitable insulin such as Lantus or Prozinc which are long acting, more gentle insulins than the old insulins.
  • We recommend hometesting the blood glucose with a human meter…it is not necessary to use a pet meter which is expensive to run and is no better. It will keep your kitty safe and you will know how the dose is working for your kitty. Only testing every so often will not tell you what is happening in between those times and an awful lot can happen in even a day.
  • HELP US HELP YOU has information about the spreadsheet, signature and hypo box which you will need to be able to look after your beloved kitty properly
This is an excellent site for diabetic cats…it has been around for more than 25 years and has very experienced people to help you.

Keep asking lots of questions!

If you can set up a spreadsheet and add any data you have, that will help us see what is happening.
The high BGs could possibly be from bouncing after your kitty has dropped low, so don’t do anything different until we can see what is happening.
If you have trouble setting up the spreadsheet, let us know and we will help

Is he your only cat or do you have other cats? If you have other cats and they are fed different food, he may be sneaking into their food. Also since diabetic cats cannot process food when their glucose is not regulated, you need to feed extra food to keep weight on them.

When was the last time he had full blood work done and a dental? An infection or dental disease can also cause higher glucose levels.
