Miko is already remission for 54 days, On Tuesday 26 OCT 2010 Miko visited vet for blood test . My Vet Doctor taking blood on his neck and cleaning his ears mite. When cleaning Miko ears he is uncontrolled. Miko very fear. When he back home, we check his blood glucose, his mmol level is going high to 13.6mmol. But still active playing. I very worry of MIKO health. Last night, he pee more and eat more (every 2 hour want to eat). Please advise, do i need to gave Miko injection insulin again? or wait until next week to see his blood test result??

Hi Theng,

Given all that Miko went through at the vet, a blood glucose level of 13.6 mmol (245 mg/dl) could just be a stress reaction. However, it is good that you are concerned. I see from past posts that you do hometest, although it's likely been awhile. Why don't you test Miko at home and see whether his BG levels are coming back down to normal after his scare at the vet?

Hi Venita and The Boyz,

Thanks for your advise. Actually Miko blood glucose level of 13.6 mmol (245 mg/dl) was our hometest after Miko back from vet.
Miko actual blood test result from vet are not yet out. I will continue hometest Miko BG level tonite whether his BG level will drop back to normal.

Miko BG level at 3.00pm is 11.3mmol (drop a bit)

Hope will drop back to normal. I appreciate it! Thanks again.

don't know if you already do this, but you might want to feed small bites of food at a time instead of a larger meal. that will help his pancreas out a bit and could help his numbers. by small bites of food i mean maybe a spoonful or two every few hours just for a little while to help him get down from the higher numbers.

Why this number should happen?? What should i do.

Visit Vet on 26 Oct 2010 : 9.00am - 4.1mmol

Yesterday 28 Oct 2010 Miko BG level :
3.00pm - 11.3 mmol
7.35pm - 10.2 mmol
11.30pm - 10.7 mmol
29 Oct 2010: 3.05am - 13.7 mmol
6.00am - 13.1mmol

Miko eat every 2 to 3 hour. I give chicken breast in morning to evening at night eat Evo Cat & Kitten Canned Food. BG level no drop at all. I already stop putting ear drop & ear cleaner (for ear mites) that my Vet Doctor give.

I feel so sorry to MIKO . If i didn't take MIKO to VET to do overall checking blood test & cleaning ear this should not be happen. What should i do. Please help.

I would give him another day to see if his numbers come back down. It does seem like the variable is stress at the vet so maybe once he relaxes, you will see lower numbers. There is no chance that he was fed anything high carb at the vet?

But regardless, it will be okay. Even if Miko ends up needing a little insulin, you know how to give it safely with testing.

Hi Sue and Oliver,
I take Miko to Vet to overall checking blood test & cleaning ear. Miko didn't eat anything at the Vet. After all done we back home. We never left MIKO alone at the VET. MIKO is very pampered.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I will update more MIKO news. Thanks again.

Best Wishes,
Theng

My Vet said wait until 1 week later if the BG level still very high have to put back insulin.
Me more and more worry. Hopefully MIKO still playing, eating like normal. But sometime sleeping alone in room. Maybe want private space.
I need more opinion from you & all FDMB member . Thanks again.

Dear THeng,

This does happen sometimes. Something triggers a rise in blood glucose levels in a cat in remission. Sometimes it is an infection. It is strange that suddenly, after a trip to the vet, Miko's numbers went up.

I think you have two choices. You could take him back to the vet and have some blood work done to see if there is any kind of infection. Or you can put him back on insulin and see if he goes into remission again. (which has happened with cats here)

I can't remember what kind of insulin you were on, or whether the diet change was enough to bring his bg levels down. If you have to start insulin, you will be able to get help here on a low starting dose, and, since you already hometesting, you can give it safely.

I know you don't want to give insulin, but the good news is that it may only take a little. And we will help.

Let us know what you decide and what help you need.

To reduce stress from ear cleaning, you might try this:

Take a cotton ball
Saturate it with the cleaner
Place cotton ball in ear
Massage outside of ear
Remove cotton ball with a gentle wiping motion

Miko may shake head vigorously; if you have a tissue handy, gently wipe loose drops.

I checked the Virbac site http://www.virbacvet.com/product/list/type/ and looked at each of the ear products - no steroid in the ones I saw, just stuff to remove excess ear wax (cerumen) and one product to eliminate ear mites using pyrethrins (a chemical found in flowers in the chrysanthemum family)

It was probably the stress of the ear cleaning procedure - being restrained and having someone mess with his ears. If you try the gentle technique above, he may not get stressed out (as much) especially if you give him a low carb treat after each cleaning. Ear mites can be very unpleasant for a cat, and the bites and scratching can result in ear infections, so he really needs them to be treated.

Theng,

I am glad you are seeing lower numbers, Theng. In my opinion, they are still pretty high. Please start that new topic with your lab results asking for specific help interpreting the results. Maybe someone will have ideas for you.

The high PVC could be due to dehydration. Do you have a blood total protein reading? If on the high side that also points to dehydration. The urea (also called BUN) is also affected by dehydration and diet. There is an asterisk (*) by the low platelet count. Is there a note or comment somewhere that go back to the platelet count? One such note/comment might says that blood slide was reviewed microscopically and clumping was not and the number of platelets was considered adequate.
