Merry Christmas! I leave Wednesday to go see my parents for a few days and need some advice on reduced dosage for Howie as I have a pet sitter coming in.. I have done a 10% reduction while on vacation before and he ALWAYS drops low (below 70) even with a reduced dose, which causes some panic for the sitter and I. She is only able to come at meal times to test, feed and shoot. Howie has been on 34 units of Levemir for several months (is an acro kittie). He’s been swinging a lot lately…he’s been in the low 200s (which is high for him as I aim for 80-120) and also dipping well below 100. Of course these last couple of cycles, he’s been in the greens. I started him at 31 units today (the 10% reduction) as he was at 71 for AMPS but am wondering if I should do more. I’ll feed/insulin him for 3 more cycles before I leave.

I appreciate help in figuring out a good reduced dose.

I can't advise on dosing since I do not have any experience with acro kitties. I was just wondering if it is possible to take Howie with you? Many of our members travel with their cats.

Hi Tracy! Howie’s spreadsheet looks very good. You are to be commended! I hope the 10 percent reduction will be sufficient, but as you said, he has this habit of dropping low while you are away. I think you will be able to tell in the next cycle or two if maybe you want to even do another reduction to just let him run a bit higher for the days that you are away. Let’s ask @Wendy&Neko what she thinks? Hi Wendy! :)

Thanks, Suzanne. I would hope that 5 cycles on a 10% reduction before I leave would drain the depot enough, but who knows. If he was higher these past few days, I wouldn’t be so anxious about it as I’m only gone for 4 cycles. But with Howie, I think he gets nervous when I’m gone and it affects his BGs! I hope you’re doing well!

We are all doing well (both furries and non-furries) apart from being cold. But I bet it’s colder where you are! I saw how Howie has been dropping lower the last few days. It also makes me nervous since you will be gone. How are the Solensia injections going? Is it helping him?

Yes, it was beyond freezing here but today is supposed to get up to 10! We are doing well. He goes for his next Solensia injection tomorrow. I do believe they are helping his QoL but I can definitely tell when it’s wearing off and he needs his next one. He’s quite ornery and squirmy.

I rescued a stray community kittie last Wed before the cold really got bad. He’s been quarantined in my home office. He’s not social and I can’t touch him, but he tolerates me being in the room with him. I just discovered he has fleas this AM so am trying to deal with that ASAP. He’s had no contact with Howie luckily. A lady offered to take him but she wants him for a companion for her outside kittie. I can get him in a sanctuary but not until spring.

I am glad to know the Solensia is helping. How long does it last? That was good of you to rescue that cat. I always assume that my rescues have fleas and I treat them first thing. In the past, I have used Advantage II but most recently I have switched to Cheristin. And I usually will give a Capstar first, which is an oral tablet that starts working very quickly to kill adult fleas. Of course, if you can’t get your hands on him, that would be difficult. How did you capture the cat? He may actually warm up to you if you give him time. How can people have outside cats there in Winter when it gets so cold?
