I am planning on investing in 2 of these electronic feeders..one for each cat. Since Milo is back on the juice, I am wanting to try feeding him several small meals a day. The only way to do this is with an automatic feeder, and to provide food for both cats. (otherwise they will both fight)

My concern is there are several (35) negative reviews on amazon stating that it is very easy for a cat to manipulate the feeder open and get to the food. I am concerned about this because my diabetic cat loves his food and will probably try to get to it before the timer goes off. Has anyone else on this board had experience with this feeder??? Is it worth the investment?

We love our PetSafe 5. Our cats were able to get into 2 other types of feeders, but because with this one, the bottom rotates instead of a lid coming open, they can't mess it up. We have had it for 4 years and love it!

HI Kelly
I have 2 of them myself for my 4 kitties.
Thay are not used as much as when I first got them but I have
never had a problem with them and think they work great.
I cannot imagine how easy it is to get into because the compartments turn as opposed to popping open.

This is the one I use.
Also, I put the food in little glass bowls from the dollar store
so that the macjine stays a a lot cleaner.
Depending on how long I will be away I will either put the food in
frozen bowls or actually freez the food in the bowls so in the later
cycle it has thawed out.
Of course we do not use it for dry, none in our house.
Hope this helps.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo the cat fight issue! EXCELLENT POINT! Hmmm, I may just have to buy two of these as well...although they are a mighty pretty penny up here in Canada...Maybe I will check ebay or something...
hmmmmm

I've never had that problem with the 5 compartment feeder. In theory a cat *could* stick a paw into the lid opening and push the tray to the next compartment but the cat would have to be really strong.

The 2 compartment one is easily opened by most cats. The lids are flimsy and are easily pried off. And the entire feeder can be flipped over and pushed around.

We love our feeder. Sophie has figured out how to open everything else in the house (doors, cabinets, drawers, anywhere she is not supposed to be), but hasn't figured out how to open the feeder yet!

Thank you for all the responses. Sounds like Sophie is like my Milo. Milo can open doors as well and figure out how to get into everything. He is also the first one to check out anything new we bring into the hosue. It was for this reason I was concerned, because I just know he will probably sit in front of the feeder and try to figure out how to get it open. I think I am going to go ahead and purchase one and experiment with it to see what happens. Should be fun to watch!

Niko goes in at 5:45 am and starts to watch. He waits patiently until it turns to the food compartment at 6 am. Pavlov's cat

I've used the PetSafe 5 feeder for about a year now for AJ and it's great. AJ used to break into his old feeder (the name escapes me, but it was pretty old), but he doesn't even try to break into the PetSafe. It's very sturdy. The only thing about it is that it doesn't have a space for an ice pack underneath it. What I do is with the fresh food, I just put an ice cube on top of it to keep it cool. For later meals, I used "meatsicles" so it slowly defrosts.

i love the visual of all these cats requesting food or waiting patiently at their timed feeders! lol
it has to be priceless!

LOL! AJ does wait at the feeder near feeding time. It amazes me that he knows what time it goes off.

Someone in a previous thread said that the Catmate ice pack will work for the PetSafe 5 compartment feeder. It may be this one: http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Ice-P ... /B0027A0I3 The PeSafe feeder has a rectangular depression under the lid opening.

Something like this may also work: http://nordicice.net/nordicice.php The smallest size might fit in the PetSafe. I don't think you can buy individual packs from the company, though.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look when I get home tonight. The area in the feeder is not very big, so it would have to be a small ice pack. The meatsicles work great, though.
