Pearl would not have made it here to the Falls without your help and encouragement. I still can't believe she has made it, and a Pred kitty too! So don't lose heart out there, those of you who have no other option but to administer steroids to your kitties for one reason or another.

I wanted to share how significant it is to me personally that Pearl has made it OTJ and on this day too. Today is Pearl's 16th birthday!! But on her 15th birthday, I didn't know if she would make it another year.

From the time Pearl came to me at 9 weeks old, Whisper (black cat in picture) was her older sibling and BFF. In March 2020, we lost Cricket (a senior I had adopted in 2014. Pearl, Whisper and Cricket were the 3 amigos). Whisper grieved for her, and after rapidly deteriorating she passed away today of last year. It was the start of the worst trial of Pearl's happy and sensitive (but anxious - she is a Siamese) life.

When Whisper passed away, Pearl was not long for this world. Her grief was unbelievable, and she started to die. On top of her significant asthma and revolving-door bouts with pneumonia, she developed severe acute Pancreatitis, and focal Peritonitis (!!) - after me insisting over weeks that something was seriously wrong (and which the vet couldn't find). An ultrasound revealed the peritonitis - which thank God she somehow beat. Then a few months later, diagnosed with FD after being hospitalized with signs of DKA (stumbling, severe dehydration, lethargy, high fever, etc - but somehow no ketones thank God again). She really was failing to thrive and NOT adjusting well after losing the love of her life.

I made a desperate try to save her by getting another cat (I know this may sound unintuitive, but Pearl had never known a day by herself, ever). I didn't mean to get Chessie, she was a senior major medical rescue, and she came to us at a time when she was almost dying - so I had 2 cats struggling to stay alive (and yes, now Chessie has beaten her demons and is thriving, too). Pearl accepted her right away, and I could see something shift in Pearl, like she was saying "Oh HELL NO. I am NOT leaving MY mom with YOU!!" Over time, Pearl has learned to thrive again with another cat in the home and has learned to be friends with someone new (although not BFFs of course).

So now here we are. After 8 months on insulin (and cooperating with me very well for all her ear pricks and injections), Pearl ends her OTJ "trial" on this significant of all days, and my hope and prayer is that it is a marker that the most major life "trial" of her life emotionally and medically is now closing a chapter too.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for supporting Pearl. We will still be around to cheer you all on! Keep up the good fight, kitties!!

Menu for Pearl's party sure is YUMMY!

It's not past PMBG check...and I didn't do it. I don't quite know what to do with myself now, after 8 months of a daily pattern it's tough to find a new one. I do think that going through FD with your cat makes you close together that I even miss a little bit by not having that intense focus on her all day and all night.

You can still do everything except actually test. So if you usually have cuddle time and treats for Pearl at test time, you can still cuddle with her and give her a few treats. It does mean finding a new routine, but you can create new special times for you and Pearl to enjoy your extra closeness.

I am so happy for you Margaret... you've worked so hard with Pearl and its paid off. Well done!!!! We've been on this journey together since the start...unfortunately, I think Missy and I are a ways away yet, but I am not losing hope that one day we can celebrate with you.
