Good Morning L&L!

Thanks Paula @Love-Paula aka Woodsywife for the thoughts this morning. March 7th was 1yr since my baby Doodles went to the bridge. We miss him so much everyday. I'm always lurking on your precious FD babies and say prayers every night for you all. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

My little man Leo just turned 15 months. He's been battling juvenile gingivitis/ stomatitis since he was 5 months old. We've been to the dental specialist twice and his last visit in January resulted in 8 extractions. Unfortunately just 5 months later he went back yesterday because his gums/ mouth were inflamed/ red where the remaining teeth were and it spread to the back top of his mouth. We decided to go ahead with FME yesterday (full mouth extractions) as it's the only possible cure and a better chance if we just nip it now.

They kept him over night and might be keeping him again tonight. They are currently tube feeding him but will start offering him food and see how he does. I'll be taking his freeze dried raw to them today but he may have to be on canned for a bit. He has poop issues on anything but the freeze dried raw so hoping he can get back on his food quickly. In the meantime S. Boulardi will help keep his stool under control hopefully. I'm also wondering if it might be best to give him canned in order to avoid permanent food aversion to the FD raw since his mouth will be tender for a week or 2....any opinions would be welcome.

Here are a few pics of the cutie-patootie head...weighing in at 15.5lbs! He's a sweet little boy that is very vocal. Civie Moo still hisses at him here and there but generally they co-exist. Leo however just LOVES her....that's part of the problem :p

Love the cutie-patootie!

Poor baby...hope that FME helps him out. That is just terrible thing to have.

Vines for a swift and rapid recovery.

Not sure on the food...you know Jones, if one tinsy little thing goes wrong he won't touch it again. I would be tempted to give him is FD raw once he is home...back to normal routine. It isn't that hard of a food, maybe some extra water to soften it up a bit more???

Poor sweet baby...so much for him to go through at such a young age, but praying that he will have perfect mouth health for a very, very long time after all this. Prayers for a quick recovery and that he can come home very soon!

He's so adorable. I hope he recovers quickly. I think I'd wait until he's home for the raw food. Sending prayers.

I just loovvvve him. Those eyes get me every time. I do hope you can bring him home today.

On the food my thought would be canned, but also offer small really tiny pieces of raw once or twice a day. Maybe even slow cook some raw so it's very tender until he can mange his normal diet.

He's so adorable! I would give Tiki Cat velvet mousse a try. It's very much the consistency of baby food with the added bonus that it's actually a complete cat food with taurine and all that good stuff. Super easy to eat and I'm sure easy to assist feed if necessary.

The freeze dried raw you can also rehydrate and mush it up, very easy to eat. It won't help if he has food aversion issues though. Do you feed a variety of flavors for the raw? Maybe get a flavor he doesn't normally eat just until he feels better? I think Primal makes a chicken and salmon freeze dried raw. Most cats go nuts for anything with fish and I wouldn't normally feed it to mine, but for short time periods and special circumstances like this, might be a good option.

I'm sorry he had to have FME, but I'm sure it will be a relief for both of you that his teeth won't be a problem anymore.

Quick healing vines for sweet Leonardo! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I visited him for about 30 min. Brought his primal FD raw and his bowl but he had no interest. He's completely stoned out of his mind! He was talkative, purring and exploring. They will keep him until he eats on his own. They're giving him AD via tub and paws crossed his bowl and food will get him going. It's less then 24hrs so thinking the anesthesia is also still in his system along with the nerve block shot they gave him. They said he's likely seeing Unicorns at the moment  I'm going to clean, scrub floors etc. to keep busy. Hopefully he'll be home tomorrow.

For you :bighug::bighug::bighug: and for Leo many vines for fast healing. Poor lil guy, so young for this. He does look like he's in a happy place in those pics.

Kitties can do amazingly well with FME's, once their mouth is healed again. Once his mouth no longer hurts, he may be more interested in food than before.

:bighug:

Oh Karen, he is beautiful. I hope this resolves his issues permanently. And I agree with Paula, those eyes are gorgeous.

Give him scritches and kisses from Texas :cat:.

Oh poor Leo! But it definitely sounds like you made the best decision to have the full mouth extraction. Hopefully he can come home tomorrow! Sending lots of feel-better vines to Leo and :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:to you!

Thanks everyone. Mama bean is sad and he won't be coming home tonight. Vet called and he currently has zero interest in food but my thoughts are that he is really drugged up, too many noises and smells. Their goal is go let him come home tomorrow but they prefer he is eating on his own (as I do). Sigh....my poor little man.

FD will always haunt me with PTSD/ OCD. I sure hope this fixes the kitten but realize the recovery might be a bit rough.

Hi Karen,
I'm so sorry poor little Leo has had to have a FME.
My daughter's cat Clover, 8 months at the time, had to have 13 teeth removed because all the back teeth had double teeth, from them budding at the side of the main tooth and had caused infections and inflammation all around her gums.. It resulted in an extremely sore mouth with very red gums. The only teeth she now has are the front ones.
When Amanda brought her home she was still a bit out of it until the next day (she had been overnight at the vet after the op) then very quiet for a few days. She fed her soft canned food and gave pain meds. She gradually started to eat.
Now she is back on her raw diet and manages small chunks of meat well. She refuses to eat any canned food at all.
Sending many feel better vines and eating vines to Leo and many hugs to you:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi @Bron and Sheba ! Thanks for sharing your DD's kitty's experience. Everyone tells me he'll be much better and will eat just fine when he's healed. Just have to get through the rough phase :( Hope you are well :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope he eats soon so that you can bring him home. I know my cats never eat at the vet's but it's been a very long time since I've had to leave a cat at the vet's overnight.
Not sure how far you are from the vet but is there any chance you could bring him home for a visit to see if he'll eat?

Ya know, Leo is a pretty sensitive little man. The goal is to bring him home today and expecting a call before noon my time. I really think he'll do better being home at this point too. When I visited him yesterday he was more interested in sniffing everything in the room, climbing on things etc. He doesn't like to be petted or picked up much and so many people are touching him let alone him being in a cage surely doesn't help at this point.

Last update here since this really isn't the place but I'm forever thankful for the L&L family so thanks for letting us post and all your thoughts and prayers.

The boy is home with his feeding tube in place. Looks promising though as he ate 2 Primal nuggets the first hour he was home :woot::woot::joyful::joyful: He's now resting comfortably on daddy's bed. Sure he's so happy NOT to be in a cage :) We'll keep up on his bupe pain meds and keep all paws crossed. Love to you all.

I'm so glad Leo is home and eating something for you. Sending more prayers for his recovery. I hope you keep posting updates here.

Oh, Karen, I am sooooo sorry I missed all this! Poor sweet Leo. He is just so handsome with or without teeth. I am sending you a bunch of vines for his healing and hope he'll be good as new ASAP. Glad he is eating for you. I understand your concern with food aversion and not wanting him to be off his regular food when he is healed. I think one redeeming quality for him is that he is so stoned that he might not remember what he ate yesterday!

Bubba's first momma who rescued him from his feral fur mom, has a cat with stomatitis and FME and he is just fine and eats like a champ. It is a hard decision to make I am sure , but the right one for Leo's health sake.

Lots of comfort vines coming to you as well. He is a little champ and will bounce back in no time. Hugs. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

So glad to see he is home, we know they are more likely to eat when they are at home with us and in a safe familiar enviroment.

I'm sure like everyone else, we want you to keep us posted on his progress.
Sending more healing vines for your gorgeous boy.

Hi Karen,

Sorry I missed all this, but so glad to hear that Leo is home and has eaten something on his own. Hopefully that icky tube can come out soon.

Sending mega healing vines for him and :bighug:s for you!

Leo ate 4 Primal nuggets after he got home at 4:30pm last night :) He did eat 1 for breakfast so far. Attached are the x-rays of his mouth which is only 4.5 months after his last cleaning and 8 extractions. He slept really good with me last night and has been enjoying his window bench this morning bird watching.

It's unbelievable how fast things can escalate and this is even with you brushing his teeth. Glad he is chilling at the window. Keep eating Leo!

Happy dance that Leonardo is back home! A lot for you both to have gone through..Leo is certainly a handsome fellow with lots of fortitude. Glad he is eating better. May happy appy continue and that the Unicorns have dispersed ;). :bighug::bighug:❤️

Leo is not eating since yesterday morning. I was able to get 20mls of AD in him last night and this morning we're trying a 1/2 dose of bupe since he was sedated all day yesterday. He took a few bites of the primal raw this morning and walked away. After 4 different cans he decided to lick a bit of one of them. I was able to get 35mls of AD down the feeding tube after that although it took me about and hour with stopping, starting etc. They were giving him 35mls 3 times a day in the hospital so worse case that's what I'll try to do until Monday. I don't think it makes sense to bring him to an ER. Maybe he's nauseous from the bupe and clavamox? We'll just keep trying but I think just keeping him home over the weekend, tube feeding and offering food is better then a hospital stay. So many cats go back to eating right away after FME....of course not mine.

Leo, stop worrying your bean and eat something, please.

Unless he becomes lethargic with bupe, I would try giving him a smidge more. If it’s pain, he’s not going to want to eat. If it’s nausea, do you have any cerenia or anything you could give to test that out?

Additionally you could try some store bought kitten milk replacer for the time being, or make your own kitten glop. Yes, it’s for neonates, generally, but it’s also a nice calorie and nutrient dense short term food for convalescing cats. Most cats get excited to drink milk.

Oh Karen, I'm so sorry that Leo isn't eating!
Do you think giving him a bit of gravy or chicken broth might peak his interest? Do you have cerenia or something else for nausea?

I was going to say the same thing about nausea Stacy did...clavamox can be very tough for some kitties. One of my civvies had just one dose of it and wouldn't eat for over 24 hours - if he didn't have fur, I'm sure he would have looked green. Maybe get some anti-nausea meds (either cerenia or ondansetron or both) from a vet, just in case??? I don't think it could hurt to give him anti-nausea meds at this point.

Continuing to pile on prayers...

I spoke to the Dr. and we're going to cut back on the bupe to .05 and give it every 12 hours. He has to be awake in order to eat. He just ate a little NV rabbit wet food and I'll keep offering food throughout the day. My only option is the ER vet until Monday for a shot of cerenia. The Dr. didn't seem overly concerned and we do have an appointment with them on Monday. As long as I can tube feed him to avoid fatty liver and dehydration until then. If need be I'll take him to the ER vet tomorrow for the cerenia but I'd rather not stress him out since we're going Monday.

Just as another option, you can give meds through the tube, so you would be able to get cerenia or ondansetron tablets into him if they'd prescribe it for you without having to take him in. Just a thought. So glad he ate a little bit!

If they would be willing, they could also predraw a syringe for you that you can inject at home so you wouldn’t have to bring him in.
