A friend called yesterday from the vet parking lot.. her dog was just diagnosed diabetic. He was badly injured by another dog last year and given prednisone. I think this is what did it for him.

She will be going to the vet today to get trained on testing and giving insulin. That vet already lost some of my respect because he said dogs can never be diet controlled diabetics, and I know that is not true. Its more rare than in cats, but still possible.

He is a little yorkshire terrier, I think. Not my favourite animal, but they love him so I will help as I can.

Hey good news dogs have more places to test on but not the ears. The vein in a dog's ear goes straight up the middle not around the edge. And FDMB has a sister site...K9diabetes.com. Also NPH and Canninsulin work just fine in droolers.

It is very hard to get a sugardog OTJ because they aren't obligated carnivores like cats. They are scavengers so are closer to omnivores like humans. They also suffer from complications such as cataracts more often than felines.

Hi Linda!
Oh an extra sweet drooler! k9diabetes.com (or close...) has lots of info. Yes there are several places to test a dog but the place I test mine is on the inside of their lip...just turn side of lip up, pat dry and pokie. Others say the spot right above the tail is the best for them - they usually keep a small spot shaved for that purpose. I check all my fuzzy feetz every few months. My 'almost extra sweet' doggie couldn't fight cancer any longer so he's on my shoulder when I need a hug from him.

They aren't as carb sensitive either - dry food isn't the same no no.
