Hi All!
I know not everyone in LL gets around to other parts of the board, so the thread in 'think tank' regarding NSAID's (pain relievers), particularly metacam may have been overlooked:
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=22322

For those who are new here (or those who didnt know this)...My girl, Latte, who left her family here in LL this July had acute renal failure from this medication about 3.5yrs ago. I put a lot of energy into trying to make some changes, which made me feel like I was banging my head against the wall (dealing with FDA, drug company, US representatives/senators, vet boards, etc). My main focus in the last year has been more of educating people, since I felt a change from the 'big guns' would never come. On the 2 month anniversary of Latte's passing, the metacam labeling was changed to include a Black Box warning on both injectible and oral solution. A dear dr letter was also sent out to all veterinarians. I dont take credit for this change, as there are soooo many people out there fighting the fight. Yet, it still was an amazing victory after such investment of time, energy, money, and love for my girl. If it werent for her resilience to continue on as long as she did, I dont think I would have become so involved in the cause.

Below is a cross post from the crf groups where I announced the changes. YOu can find all the new labels and dear dr letter on the link provided in my signature (http://www.metacamkills.com).

I write this with tears of happiness flowing down my face. For those of us who
have lost our cats or had them permanently damaged from the drug metacam, for
those who have reported adverse reactions or filed complaints with the drug
company or fda, for those who continue to spread the word and educate
anyone/everyone who may be considering the use of metacam in their cats, and for
all those kitties who will be saved....THIS IS FOR YOU! Congratulations!!!!

Metacam has just recently changed its labeling (for oral suspension) to include
a black box warning for use in cats. The black box states:

"Warning: Repeated use of meloxicam in cats has been associated with acute renal
failure and death. Do not administer additional injectable or oral meloxicam to
cats. See Contraindications, Warnings, and Precautions for detailed
information."

Not black boxed:
"Contraindications: Dogs with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam should not
receive Metacam Oral Suspension. Do not use Metacam Oral Suspension in cats.
Acute renal failure and death have been associated with the use of meloxicam in
cats."

The Client Information Sheet states (in bold):
"Do not use Metacam Oral Suspension in cats. Acute renal failure and death have
been associated with the use of meloxicam in cats."

The Dear Dr Letter (sent to all veterinarians and posted on veterinarian
websites) discusses one of the things I attempted to drive into the FDA's head
about dosing/concentration:

"METACAM Oral Suspension is not licensed in the U.S. for use in cats.
Unfortunately adverse events in cats do occur. These have been reported at a
consistent level over the past 5 years and the majority following the
inappropriate off-label administration of the more concentrated 1.5 mg/mL
formulation in cats."

Please note, this is for the United States ONLY. Many other countries have
approved this drug for use in cats (with a lessened concentration than available
in the U.S.). However, I would continue to heed to the manufacturers warning,
no matter where you are, unless it is a last resort/tried everything else/might
have to pts cat if we dont go this route. Be familiar with side effects to look
for if metacam is ever used on one of your cats, and have regular labs done.
Report ANY adverse reactions to the FDA AND Drug company, or whomever the
organization overseeing drugs in your country may be.

I wished more than anything Latte could have been here last night for me to
share this news. Its been a loooooooong battle. One that often seemed
impossible to win. Please know, each and every one of you who have spoken out
on this drug MADE this happen. WE, the consumers, the caregivers of those who
cannot speak for themselves. WE DID IT in their honor!

Carolyn (and everyone's angel - Latte)

To Latte, and all the other kitties whose lives were shortened because of this drug! drinking24

(((Carolyn)))

What an outstanding victory! It takes a huge amount of effort to get a black box warning in place. The work you and others who embarked on this endeavor will effect prescribing practices at a national level. Thank you for all of your hard work. Latte would be proud.

Yay Carolyn!! You are a superstar and you have honored Latte in the best way possible. Thank you for saving so many people's cats. While there are
some great vets out there, even they are still using this horrible drug and people continue to just follow their advice. This is a wonderful victory
and was no small task! (((((Carolyn))))

Carolyn, congratulations on your part in this victory. I know nothing about black boxes, but I do know about the problems with Metacam for cats; unfortunately, because of beautiful Latte.
I'm so impressed with your perserverance, in getting the word out, and helping educate people about this.
I'm so very sorry that your sweet Latte was the impetus for your quest to do this.
Big cyber hug to you, my friend.

This is outstanding! Having lost a kitty to metacam use, I am overjoyed to read that not only will the vets be educated, that there is labeling now on the product.

Bravo to you Carolyn - we all know how diligently you have worked on this. As Sienne said - latte would be so proud.

Thank you for your continued efforts to educate people. I saw your posts on the CRF groups, too. I hope all the vets are reading and listening, and just in case they aren't we need to know the facts. Latte is looking down at you and saying "thanks, mom".

OT? Good heavens, no way!!! For news like this, as far as I'm concerned you can go OT just as much and as often as you darn well like!!!

CONGRATULATIONS! (to you and all involved) that is one outstanding accomplishment. Be VERY proud!

Perry, Cathy & Sooty

Carolyn, this is just wonderful wonderful news! I know it will never ever bring Latte back, but it is a great way to honor her memory. You put so much love and attention into Latte's care and into the fight. I am so glad it was for naught. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your part in this fight. Although it didn't come fast enough in your case, there will be many many other kitties and beans that will not have to go through what you and Latte did.

To YOU, Carolyn, for fighting on behalf of Latte's spirit, and all the kitties you've saved. This is a huge victory. Thank you. (((Hugs))) :YMHUG:

Carolyn I'm new to LL but I also want to congratulate you and the others involved in this fight which had to seem overwhelming and frustrating so many times. Latte could not have her memory more honored than by this legacy which will save many cat's.
I know t his is not much solice for your loss but as someone who is getting oral cleaning soon on my Powder, I will say no to Metacam which he and my dog have both had before. Bless you

What a wonderful memorial for Latte. Thank you for being so brave and so strong to help bring this about. Congratulations! drinking24

Oh, congratulations Carolyn!!!!

Latte, this one's for you!!! (and knowing Latte, she's looking down on us saying "I know")...

Oh Carolyn, that's great news. Fantastic! I wish Latte could have been there, for you to celebrate with, too :(

If my vet read it, maybe, he'll remember me being so adament about not giving metacam to J.D. during his dental (I fought hard, and lost that battle). Oh, this will save so many lives. Good work, Carolyn!!

GREAT JOB Good Buddy! :YMHUG:
All your hard work has paid off and who knows the countless kitties that will be saved because of you standing up for what is right! I am so proud of you and happy that something has been done about this!! Many thanks from all of us!! (((((Carolyn)))))

Carolyn
Congratulations on such wonderful news!! Latte has another reason to be
so proud of her Mama.

I will have to bring this news to my Canadian vet that still uses it.
My little Izzy will be going in for surgery in a few weeks and I keep
asking them what they use for pain.
In honour of Latte I have told them many times that metacam does
not come anywhere near my babies.
I actually found some in my house which had been given to Max a few years ago
and of course I froze when I saw that I had given it to him.

Great news Carolyn!!!

((((Carolyn))) never an OT around here, thank you for sharing this news....and congrats to you and the many others who fought with you.

Missing our sweet Latte very much ((((((hugs)))))
