Oscar's Lung consolidation - treatment options?

Oscar went in for a check-up today. We re-did the x-rays to check on his lungs
and also on his belly since he has a pot belly. They didn't have the x-rays from
last year since they were sent to the specialist in Indianapolis and apparently
the office didn't send the x-rays back to my local vet or they are otherwise MIA.
As I remember before, he had tramlines and donuts, and his heart was fairly visible.
This time, the vet (different one, same practice) says that it looks like he as
significant "consolidation" in the upper part of his lungs, probably scarring from a
previous lung infection, and that his current wheezing may not be asthma related
at all. I know he does have asthma since every time I try to decrease the
flovent dosage he starts coughing, so his flovent isn't going to change. But I
am worried about why the upper part of his lungs on the x-ray look so white. I
have loaded a cell phone picture of the x-ray the bottom of this post for you all to
see what you think.

He got blood taken today for a full panel and a thyroid test (long story). We
should hopefully have the results back tomorrow, and thyroid might take until
Thursday. I am having this checked because he has been excessively licking his
front legs since October and now has little bald spots on his legs, still has
dandruff, his hair on his neck from getting blood drawn last year still hasn't
fully grown back in, and now his behavior has changed (is becoming increasingly
dominant toward Yoda and biting his scruff when Yoda gets too vocal around food
time). Oscar is slated to get a dental on Thursday.

From what I am looking at online, I am worried that there may be fluid at the
top of the lungs, and some at the bottom too (there is something at the top of
the diaphragm that I don't know what it is) Any insight on his x-ray you could give
me is much appreciated!

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

Awwh, poor Oscar.
What did the vet say you do for "lung consolidation"? - is there anyting?
They must have done a free T4? That will give you the answer to your thyroid worries.
Good luck, I hope you find answers.

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

They haven't suggested anything yet. I think we are waiting for the blood work to come back tomorrow. They did run a free T4, but that may take an extra day. We won't know until we hear back really. I plan on asking about giving him a long course of a strong antibiotic in case there is still an active infection going on. It is always a waiting game it seems :YMSIGH:

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

You know about not using covina, right? (of course you, do since you're here... : )
Sending good thoughts for good results.

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

Oh yes ... it is already marked in my charts. Plus, I wouldn't consider Convenia to be a strong broad spectrum antibiotic either :-D

Can you post the VD view of the x-rays? It will hep in see what is happening.

I am guessing this is the top view? I didn't get a cell phone pic of that one, but it showed density across the top lobes of both lungs also.

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

Just talked to one of the vet techs this morning and expressed my concerns about
putting him under for a dental. She said that she can do a basic cleaning tomorrow
a little at a time and not put him under since he is such a complacent cat. That will
at least take care of his completely plaque covered molars and help the bacteria
level in his mouth. I have read that bad mouths can exacerbate heart and lung
infections too.

I asked her about what can be done to help his lungs and she said the main vet
tech would be the one to ask, but she is not in on Wednesdays. I'll ask her
about a strong AB tomorrow when I drop Oscar off.

Part of his blood work came back already.

Cholesterol was a little high (always has been)
one liver enzyme was a little high (probably ALT - has been before, he just needs milk thistle again)
glucose was a little high (he does mini bounces in the first 4 hours after the am shot)
lymphocytes were a little low (like 1100 when low value is 1200 - has been low last 2 checks too,
speculated possible infection somewhere for a while but could never find it).

T4 and TSH were normal - though I don't know the numbers (T4 has been the very low side of normal past 2
times).

Still waiting to hear back from the free T4 test.

Here is a link to a spreadsheet of his past blood work:

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

I am not sure about cleaning teeth without being put under. it is pretty hard to scrape teeth even if complacent. most of the bacteria is under the gum line and that is where it needs to be removed from also.that is where the infection part comes from. this has come up often on here

Re: Oscar's lung/abdominal x-ray: Lung consolidation?

Anyone have any treatment advice on what I should discuss with my vet tomorrow?
