Hello all - I am Anne and my cat, Butters, was just diagnosed as diabetic. He is my third diabetic (Alex GA 2002 and Hyde, Acro cat, GA 2015). Some of the long-timer names are familiar!
Butters is a 8 year old fluffy orange tabby cat with moderate CH (Cerebellar Hypoplasia). He gets around just fine - we call him Mr Wiggles! He has a history of peeing inappropriately but lately we noticed he was at the water dish more often and the pee lakes more frequent. A visit to the vet confirmed our suspicions - he is diabetic. His BG was 488 and Fructosamine - 736. Here we go again!
Based on a quick scan of the message board - the philosophy of treating diabetics has not changed much. Low carb diet, test before every shot, start low, go slow.
Vet is recommending we start with Lantus. We are going to have a Freestyle Libre attached tomorrow since I will be out of the country for 3 weeks starting on Monday. Even though my husband (Kirk) has done the testing and shots routine before, he thought this would be easier than trying to get ear sticks on an newly diagnosed diabetic by himself. Please be kind if he has to reach out while I am gone
