Just wondering if anyone has looked into any of the off brands of canned cat food. I know the Pet Smart brand is on the list, but that was the only off brand. Splitzie is definitely worth every cent, but trying to save everywhere I can.
Thanks,
Kathy and Splitzie

Did you print out both the old and new lists? I know the walmart brand is there and a fair number of others. I actually just discovered this week that a local little pet store has the EVO at significant savings over the big box pet stores. the 13.5 oz can was only $1.85 and the big box store wanted almost that for 5.5 oz.

\we were on the petsmart brand for about 9 mos when patches #'s starting creeping up after being off insulin almost 2 yrs.went back to fancy feast ..i am with you with the saving money! we recently switched over to EVO and i actually spend alot less, for one they eat less, and i go thru one of the 13.3 oz cans in about 1 1/2 days give or take...i called around and was able to find a specialty store that gave a discount for ordering a case at a time, in the long run the better food even though more pricey will be worth it in the end!

I just discovered this, too. I was in my local independent pet store a few weeks ago, and I saw that 13.5 can of EVO was $1.75! It worked out to be less expensive than buying Fancy Feast at PetSmart.

I have a small pet store not too far from me, maybe I'll look into that. I've always thought of the smaller stores as being more expensive. Will definitely look into that.

Thanks. :-)

Check into the big cans--Wellness and EVO are two good foods that local stores usually have that are way cheaper than the chains, and end up being more cost effective.

What's your budget? About how much food are you feeding a day? Maybe I can give you a few suggestions.

I also started saving some money on litter by switching Bandit's litterbox over to the Breeze http://www.breezeforcats.com/....I love it and I'm recommending it to every cat owner I know.

Honestly, my budget is as little as I can get away with right now. My mom is helping a bit on food. She kinda feels bad. I ended up with Splitzie coming from her just a few months before she was diagnosed. But, other than that, unfortunately, I am unemployed. So, the cheaper the better at this point. Of course within reason.
I have been feeding her whenever she will eat, we haven't really gotten a schedule. She REALLY needs to gain some weight, so it's been, oh want food? She is only eating a little at a time. But, she hasn't really been the issue, I can afford her food., since she doesn't eat much. It's switching the other 3 cats so there is no more temptation of dry food, although she has done very good about not getting into it. I want to get them off dry and on better foods.
And that Breeze sounds pretty cool, but according to the site, I would need 5 of them... Can't really do it right now. Once I'm back working, will definitely look into it.

Thanks much everyone. :-)

Maybe Friskies in the big cans then? They have them at PetSmart and PetCo I believe. Turkey & Giblets and Mixed Grill are both under 10% carbs and you can usually find them easily in the big 13 oz cans. The 5.5 oz cans are pretty affordable, too, and they're pretty cheap at Walmart.

Walmart also has their house brand Special Kitty in the big cans and the turkey and giblets and mixed grill in that is under 10% carbs also. And last time I looked I believe it was still under $1 per can, but since Friskies just jumped in price it might be just a little over a dollar now.

Also I really like their Special Kitty Brand Cat litter, it is low in dust, clumps well and so far they seem to be tracking it through the house less, and a 27 lb box is like $7, and with 11 cats we go through a lot of litter and cat food.

Right now with our glorious rainy water (I'm married to a roofer), money has been tight, we haven't gone over to the Special Kitty big cans yet, but still with still feeding Friskies in the small (5.5 oz.) cans it runs us about $50/week for pet products that takes care of food and litter for 11 cats and food for an 80lb drooler.

Another place I cut costs is watching for online coupons as well as those that come in our sunday paper. Alot of times you can just send a nice email to the pet food company and they will send you coupons for their product of your choice. Done that a couple of times with Friskies and gotten coupons for several free cans.

Luckily I have lots of friends with cats and most of us are broke...lol So once a month we get together at someone's house for lunch and trade cat product coupons, and cans of food we have bought and kitty turned his/her nose up at. I have one civie here that will love a flavor one week, and then the next week look at me like I have two heads for serving that vile stuff to him...lol Alot of times we will also make toys for shelter cats (and of course samples go home to our own cats) at these luncheons.

Kmart also has a rewards program where you earn points that can be turned into cash on everthing you buy as well as you get a recipe coupon off your next pet product purchase and several times a year I can pay for the Fur Gang's food for the week with just points. And since the points are good on anything in the store, they've saved my tail a couple of times between paychecks, for things like milk and eggs.

Just a few of the things that I have found to shave a little of the cost of caring for a bunch of furry babies, hope it helps.

Mel, Maxwell & The Fur Gang

We also use the special kitty turkey and gibelts, they come in 4 packs (wrapped) of 5.5oz cans each .. they run $1.34 (total) here in MI and mocha loves it.

Thanks, I will definitely check into Walmart. We have one not too far from here. I'd have to use it along with other kinds as Splitzie is one of those that likes it one day and the next won't even touch it. We actually have to have 3 kinds in different containers in the fridge and switch off. Yeah, she's just a bit picky. lol
The once a month is a great idea. I really don't have many friends that are cat lovers, I have all dog lover friends. lol Go figure. But, I have my family close by and they help out a lot. My mom's grabbing any samples she can find online and passing the sites on to me.
Thanks for all of the info from everyone, I really appreciate it.

I sometimes feed my cats the Walmart Special Kitty brand foods. I have noticed very little difference in Ricky's BG levels between that brand and the Friskies canned foods. I don't know if the prices are the same everywhere, but my Walmart has Special Kitty for $0.68 and Friskies for $.070 for the large cans. I love it, I can feed 8 cats a meal for less than $1.50. I wish I could eat that cheap.

When Gabby was very sick and got very picky, I realized at one point I was spending more on her food than mine. One day I opened up a can of "Roasted pheasant" cat food for her right before I opened a can of "Chef Boyardee" people food for me. Her food cost twice as much, and looked more appetizing. I miss her terribly, but I am a little relieved that I now can afford to eat better than my cat again.

Julia, I completely understand. Sometimes I open Splitzie's food and think she's getting better food as well. They smell as good, if not better than half the low carb stuff I eat myself. lol
Thanks again everyone, I have a lot to look through now. lol :-)
