Numbers trending down all day?
He ate 1 can FF pate at breakfast before insulin dose. I checked him at +6 and fed half can Hills Glucosupport. Just checked PMPS and its lower than his other readings today? I just fed him 1 can FF pate for dinner after testing. Should I dose? Scared of hypo overnight....

Did you skip tonight? Looks like Odin might be breaking a bounce today.

We don't decide what to shoot based on preshots, but rather how low a dose is taking him. Having said that, you've skipped a couple shots (not sure why you did last night), so I suspect for you it would be easier to start o a lower dose and work your way up. When following SLGS for dosing, and feeding all LC wet food, as per your signature, the starting dose is 0.5 units. Provided he was not diagnosed with ketones. Do you have the U-100 syringes with half unit markings?

Yes I skipped tonight.
Were still getting used to things and I was unable to successfully dose him last night

I can’t offer any advice as I’d be worried I’d get it wrong as Arya was only diagnosed in January (but is on her OTJ trial) and I just don’t have the expertise to offer advice but we were in your shoes not that long ago and we skipped a few times in the evenings for the same reasons you mentioned but actually it was a mistake as her numbers were higher than usual in the following cycles. We had to get used to shooting low and making sure she ate every few hrs to keep the numbers up.
Most people on FDMB are in bed when we needed advice but @Bandit's Mom in India was fabulous and although I felt like I shouldn’t really bother her others kept saying “tag Bandit’s Mom” so that’s what we did and always got great advice.

Wishing you well on your journey and yea you need syringes… not the pen needles.. there’s a sticky on here of what types of syringes and how to use them (eg our vet said “use them 4 or 5 times each- but the sticky explains why you SHOULDN’T do that)
I was crying everyday about hurting my princess but after a few wks she didn’t care about the ear pricking - wasn’t fond of the needle but I think she was being dramatic
We are on day 9 off the insulin now and I know we wouldn’t be if I hadn’t found this site. The vet had her on 3 times the amount of insulin for her weight. She also didn’t tell us to test her pre-shot only 4 hours post shot. If you look at Arya’s spreadsheet you’ll see that we tested WAYYY more than that and I think that was one of the reasons why we have done so well with her.

I think I am extra frustrated by the lack of information my vet gave me. She told me people usually dont glucose test their pets at home at all, but I insisted!

My vet at the time Ivy was diagnosed also said I didn’t need to test.
It just “felt wrong” to me to shoot blindly.
So I began my search online for answers.
And we landed here in 2022. Here we are thanks to all of the valuable information and support

Start reading the Lantus package inserts and keep those leaflets handy; they'll help you along the way. When she took a reduction from 0.5u she went to literally 1 drop. Wendy explains it best but it’s when you insert the syringe and just let it bounce back rather than extracting anything yourself. That bounce back will put 1 drop into the syringe.
