Not eating.

It’s been a while since I’ve had to post on here... Ninj has been doing decently well OTJ, but then about a week ago, out of nowhere he’s refusing to eat. At first, I thought he got tired of the food we were giving him (Sheeba pates) so we got Fancy Feast (lots of different flavors) but he’s not going for that either. He’s acting hungry, asking for food and is his usual snuggly self. He just won’t eat much (he eats tiny amounts). He’s down to 14.7 lbs (he was 15.8-16 about a month ago) and I’m freaking out. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?
 
Hi Viktoria, we can rule out dental since he had one 10/2 . Has he ever had pancreatitis? They will stop eating when they have it. Also, does he seem to be in pain? Is in going into a meat loafing position? His numbers still look good.

With my guys, they got tired of minced food ( feed raw) when I started giving them ground raw, they started eating again. I was told that they get tired of the same texture food. That is something you might try.

I tried even canned tuna, still no luck.

He’s never had pancreatitis that I’m aware of. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, but he does seem slightly uncomfortable. Or I may be projecting at this point. My brain is going to worst case scenarios, especially with this much of weight lost this quick. The vet can’t get him until Monday. Should I wait, or just take him in to the emergency vet?
 
what about cheese? or a scrambled egg?

You could also be seeing his body respond to his food . It's possible the protein you are feeding him is starting to bother his digestive tract. If that's the case, he could be feeling nauseous.
You said he asks for food....
and then turns away...

when that happens, does he sniff, maybe even a small smack of his lips, and turn away. That is a sign of nausea and that is best treated with
ondansetron ( a human drug so the vet gives you a prescription and you take it to your own pharmacy)
 
Hi Viktoria! I'm new to the forum and new to managing FD but have gone through many pancreatitis flare ups with my boy.

I've tried these things in the past to get Ming to eat (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't):
- hand feeding
- putting a little bit of food on the floor in front of them (I don't know why this works for him. And I just keep putting a little bit each time he finishes the bite)
- baby food - meat only flavour
- cat tubes - those tubes with the meat paste in it
- dry food - Ming likes dry when he's has panc.

How is his hydration?

I'm not comfortable telling you if you should go to emerg now or not. But I personally, if financially able, would go even just to get some pain meds, anti-nausea meds, appetite stimulants or fluids in him.
 
At the ER now, waiting to see a doctor. I tried giving him some string cheese (his very favorite) and he wasn’t having more than a tiny piece... fingers crossed that it’s nothing too crazy and we’ll get our boy fixed up quick.
 
The bloodwork came back normal. The vet didn’t really seem to know what was going on. Gave us anti nausea meds and an appetite stimulant. Didn’t really have any good ideas on why he’s not eating.

Just an idea for you to consider,I had the same problem with my Taco and he was prescribed an appetite stimulant,and it would work for a few days. Then he didnt want to eat again. Someone told me he could be nauseas and to try pepcid generic FAMOTIDINE, I went out and got the only one I could find at the time,(20mg) and I used a pill cutter and cut that pill in 1/4 , then shaved some off to make it about 3mg. He has been on it faithfully ,for a few months, and takes 1 piece 30 minutes before his AM &PM meal.
The reason I say try the nausea med first and not both together is you wont be able to tell which is doing what. The nausea could be from gas in his belly or really anything else, but, not serious. The appetite stimulant will just make him eat for a few days, most likely, and could mask something more serious and you'll be back to square one. Cerenia works well for nausea and lack of appetite too.

Cookie just went through the same bout of not eating much, vomiting and diarrhea. Same thing, inconclusive blood work and tests. She's also been on pepcid, 5 mg/day which has seemed to help. I think the Pepcid and Ceremia helped to get her back on track. I think she had pancreatitis with acid reflux.

Be aware that Pepcid can prevent the absorption of B vitamins, so if you see the opposite - ravenous eating - kitty may not be absorbing all nutrients.

I'd see if they would give you some Cerenia and try it with Pepcid.

I didnt know that , thank you, I surely havent seen the ravenous eating :) Just normal and he also quit puking those little puddles of clearish yellow stuff since then, but, good to know :bighug:
