My cat was diagnosed about two weeks ago. We went back in for one Chuck and she goes back in in a week for her second check where they had upped her dosage of insulin. I am wondering if I’m actually giving her the insulin the needle is so small. I can’t tell if it’s puncturing her skin or not. I’ve seen some improvement as I’m not filling her water bowl as often does anyone else have a sure way of knowing you’ve done the injection? I can’t feel the needle puncture her skin.

Welcome to the FDMB. In order for us to help you we need some information about you and your sugar baby. What’s her name? How old is she? What are you feeding her? Which insulin are you using? Are you testing her blood sugar . If so which meter are you using, and human or pet? I have a feeling you have not done this yet since you have gone back to the vet weekly. It’s important to learn how as we all check before each shot to make sure the bg is high enough to give insulin. I didn’t test at first at home but had a meter ready. When I saw a rather low bg at my vet I started testing myself.

Here’s a sticky that goes more into detail.

Feel the area after you inject and if really wet it’s likely a fur shot. If dry it went in. If at all wet you can’t assume it’s a fur shot so never shoot twice. You will get the hang of it.

We are very data oriented so you will need to eventually set up a spreadsheet and signature so we don’t keep asking you the same questions. There’s a lot to learn and lots of people here eager to answer your questions.

Leila is 10 years old and was diagnosed beginning of this March. I am not testing her blood sugar yet as we’ve just begun this journey. I’m following the doctor’s lead. She eats a combination of the Hills prescription D/M diet. And gets 2 clicks in the am and 1 click in the evening of Lantus. I’m not sure what the spreadsheet and signature is that you stated. But I think I answered the rest of the questions.

Thanks for the information you supplied. It sounds like you are using a pen and injecting tow units in the morning and one at night. We have found here that you want to give the same amount of insulin both day and night. Which insulin do you have? If Lantus or a biosimilar insulin it is a depot insulin and it builds up over time. We also increase and decrease in .25 increments to avoid skipping a dose that is good for your cat and keeping your cat in the best range possible. You would need to get syringes in order to do that. We feel you need to test before each shot to make sure the bg is safe to inject. Dosing is based upon how low the insulin takes the cat which some additional tests are needed to find out how low the bg is going. If using Prozinc which is the other insulin for cats it’s not a depot insulin. Those are the best insulins for cats.

When you have time please read the sticky I posted above. It will explain the spreadsheet and signature and has directions for both.
