Hi, my cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes. I was wondering if I can still give him treats? If so which ones are safe?
As for treats I see some members buy these and they will buy the same one for dogs they are exactly the same just bigger, so break them up, you will get more for your money, check it out on the Chewy site
PureBites Chicken Breast Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Treats

VitalEssentials is also another good freeze dried brand. .One of our members says her cat loves the minnow flavor

The only treats safe for diabetic cats are freeze-dried protein treats. Luckily there are a LOT of different protein options, so you should be able to find one or two your cat likes! One of my cats loves the duck liver ones, while others love the rabbit. There was a cat at the rescue whose favorite were the minnows.

;):coffee:

Are you home testing kitties blood glucose? Its the only real way to keep him safe AND best of all we can teach you how to do it!
Not yet. He was Diagnosed 2 days ago...Vet wants me to change his diet then make an appointment to get the insulin settled. I have a unique situation, I was born without limbs, so giving him insulin and taking his sugars is going to be difficult. If anybody has any suggestions on how someone without hands can do this I would appreciate it.

You have a good Vet! I think working closely with him will serve you. Lets see what others have to say. We have over 26,000 members (of course not ALL of them post) but we should be able to figure something out with you.

Changing the diet BEFORE insulin is the proper way to start out.
hold on for more replies.

I have to leave soon so I will tag some folks.

Not true. Any kind of pure protein treat is fine for a diabetic cat. So cheese, bits of pure raw or cooked meat or fish, freeze dried treats, etc are all fine.

Perhaps if you let us know how do you handle daily life tasks now, we can come up with suggestions? Things that everyone needs to do, like cooking or brushing your teeth or hair?

Deb I'm taking your advice and shutting this thing down for the night. Its been a LONG day. I am seeing double.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope Darcy comes back .
I may sleep in tomorrow...If Zoe will allow me that guilty pleasure.... Now whos kiddin who?:p
Good night.

I'm so sorry that I haven't replied! I got really busy over the weekend. Epic seems to be feeling a bit better. He asked for breakfast this morning. I do have an update, I got several volunteers in the building that I live in to help me give epic his injections when he starts them! I am very grateful for everybody's help. He starts his new diet today, and I am going to email his vet to get him started on insulin. Thank you again, everybody!

I live alone so everything is set up so I do most things myself. I do have an assistant (who loves Epic) who comes 3 days a week. I have special equipment to do daily tasks and I use a prosthetic arm when it's needed.

Assistants! Minions! Helpers! Whatever you want to call them, it's nice to have people to help you out with life responsibilities.
Think about how you might use any of your current special equipment to help you with the new needs for Epic.
Practice giving insulin shots, with a syringe filled with colored water (or juice) into an orange.
See if you can insert the test strips into the blood glucose meter.

It would be easier to hold the lancing device, then to freehand the lancet. See if you will you be able to hold the lancing device, and change out the lancets yourself.

I guess I'm saying to see what you might be able to accomplish on your own, or have your helpers setup for you ahead of time. After all, you've made many adaptations in your life, and these are a new set of tasks to learn. No different really than anyone else that finds this message board, and learns to home test and give their cat insulin.

It's all new to people here.

Epic update. He’s eating his new food, and loves it. His blood sugar isn’t spiking from his breakfast, so he’s not drinking as much. He’s actually eating the whole can of food which makes me incredibly happy. I bought three kinds of the freeze-dried treats. He wouldn’t touch the Minnow, but loves the chicken giblets. He’s back to walking around with his tail up, and he’s purring loud as ever.
