I used this forum 25 years ago to get my newly adopted cat Daisy (GA) regulated. I went on to become a shelter veterinarian in the Austin, TX area. We have a sweet, older boy named Butterfinger that was surrendered to us due to his owner's health. He has been with us since July 31st. A couple of weeks ago, our staff noticed he was drinking lots of water. I ran blood work and a urinalysis and diagnosed him with diabetes. I have just started him on Lantus BID and Fancy Feast, which he is happily eating. He is not ketotic, and his other lab values (kidney, thyroid, liver) are all normal. I am hopeful that we will get him into remission since he has not been symptomatic for very long, but I do worry about him being in the shelter. We have over 500 animals and a couple hundred on medications. Our staff doesn't have the resources to check BG prior to every insulin injection, although they have been instructed not to give insulin if he hasn't finished all of his food. I am worried about him developing other health conditions here at the shelter, especially an upper respiratory infection.
