Newly diabetic cat not eating

Hey everyone. My little guy Timon he is 16 years old. Last friday I took him to the vet because I noticed he wasn't himself. Very lethargic. Not doing his normal activities like greeting me at the door or in the morning when I got up. He wasn't eating his treats. And he looked a lot skinner. So I took him to the vet last Friday and they told me his blood sugar was 360. They said he was now diabetic and prescribed vetsulin 1 unit twice a day. They also said his pancreatic and liver enzymes were high but they could be due to the diabetes she recommended an ultrasound at a later date. Anyways he would not eat on his own last weekend so I had to syringe feed him with wet cat food I blended up with water to give him insulin so he could get insulin without going hypo. I took him back to the vet this monday and they prescribed

Mirtazapine to put on his ear to increase his appetite. That hasnt been working i have still had to syringe feed him all week. His sugars have been all over the place. Some he has been on the lower ends of 77 where I didnt give insulin. I bought a home glucose kit to check his sugars. But its almost been a week now he still isnt eating on his own. I'm wondering if he is naueous and thats why hes not eating or maybe something else is going on causing this? It's worrying me so much. I'm supposed to take him to the vet tomorrow i was going to ask about them giving me something for nausea see if that helps. Hes drinking water still and moves around a little. Hes still pretty tired and not his normal self. I feel i can even smell the ketones coming off his breath since last week which maybe is normal since his sugars aren't regulated. But any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Its been a very stressful week for him and me and all I want is him to feel better. If he doesnt eat on his own I worry he wont make it or I'll have to put him down and the thought of losing my baby terrifies me.

Hi there ! I'm so sorry your baby isn't feeling well. I always assume a cat who isn't eating, but is an unregulated diabetic- is nauseous. Having liver values that are elevated can also decrease appetite - especially if and when it also starts to affect the pancreas ( which is super sensitive and gets inflamed by issues with other organs). If he was not getting enough insulin and truly was/is diabetic, things like DKA become a concern. Without labs to see numbers for bloodwork values its hard to say but, Pancreatitis will also put a cat off their meals and could be part of the equation since they mentioned the pancreas values. Any antiemetic or GI protectants ( Ondansetron/ Pepcid/ Cerenia/ Protonix) would likely help and as long as they don't suspect a blockage or liver failure 🤔 Did they send you with any meds ? What foods have you tried?
With my little man, I had to try completely different foods with new protein or else he wasn't interested. Sometimes a good beechnut stage 1 beef or turkey would hit the spot or just broiled turkey breast and rice. Have you seen any vomiting or diarrhea? Is Timon going to food like he's interested but not eating ?
 
Hey! He will sniff food some times and he walks away. Even on foods I know are his favorites. I even tried putting turkey down and he loves that. The only medication they sent me was Mirataz. I have tried dry food blue buffalo wilderness and he normally likes that. Tried multiple wet foods mainly salmon because he normally likes salmon. I'm just trying everything to get him to eat honestly. Maybe it is the nausea causing it then. See if csn have the vet prescribe an anti nausea medication tomorrow when I go.
