Hi everyone, i'm new to this site and i thought i'd introduce myself. my name is Crystal and i have a service dog and 2 cats. one of my cats is diabetic. she's 11 years old, i had her since she was 8 weeks. she was diagnosed with hyperthyroid a couple years back.she was on pills for it for along time but the pills stopped working and she needed to have surgery to have part of her thyroid gland removed. she had the sugery a few weeks ago which went very well. when she came home she was doing well but then she started becoming lethargic again and losing weight. she was down to only 4 lbs. she was also eating and drinking excessively but not gaining weight. i brought her back to the vet and the vet said she didn't really look good and her gums were pale. she did bloodwork and it showed the red blood cell count slightly low and blood sugar slightly elevated but not to the point to be considered diabetic. within the next week she just kept getting worse and when i brouhgt her back they did more bloodwork and it showed she had diabetes. her thyroid level was normal so the surgery was a success. she is now on insulin the brand is Lantus and she gets 2 units in the morning and 2 units at night. she spent quite a bit of time in the hospital, she was there for almost a week to get her blood sugar regulated to know how much insulin to give. she seems to be doing much better than she was. she's more perky and alert and doesn't sleep as much. she's also not drinking and urinating excessivly like she was. she has also gained a couple ounces. she go back to the vet in a month for a recheck.

Hi Crystal and welcome to FDMB!

May I be nosy and ask what you have the service dog for? I ask because we really stress hometesting kitty's glucose levels, for many reasons, but if it's not possible we do try our hardest to come up with other solutions for that. Hometesting will allow you to see at any time what kitty's glucose levels are, thus it helps with making sure they are getting the right amount of insulin and it keeps them safe from overdoses.

4lbs is indeed very tiny so I am a little concerned about the dose but i am by no means as well versed as dozens of others here who use lantus.

Hi Crystal

welcome to the FDBM

Is Fluffy the kitty that is diabetic? Are you home testing the blood glucose levels (BG)?

What foods is Fluffy eating?

You will find a lot of information here - I will start you off with The Feline Diabetes Members Board Health Links
on feline nutrition, food transitioning, home testing, hypo tool kit, what to do in case of hypo and a really good food chart:

EDIT TO ADD: if u could add LANTUS USER to your subject line, this will help get more attention

Hi Crystal & Fluffy,

Welcome!! I'd like to introduce myself to you as well. (Meow!)

My name is Tananda, I'm 11 years old and was diagnosed with feline diabetes and hypotropfic cardiomyopathy in November of 2009. I'm not on insulin yet, my condition is being controlled with diet, exercise and oral meds. My human servant Terri puts me on a treadmill 3x times a day and takes BG readings 3-4x a day. I'm not entirely happy about this but I take it like a champ. Everyone here has been so helpful to us, I know you will find all the support you need and lots of answers to any questions you have.

Kindest regards,
Tananda
