Hi everyone, i'm new to this site and i thought i'd introduce myself. my name is Crystal and i have a service dog and 2 cats. one of my cats is diabetic. she's 11 years old, i had her since she was 8 weeks. she was diagnosed with hyperthyroid a couple years back.she was on pills for it for along time but the pills stopped working and she needed to have surgery to have part of her thyroid gland removed. she had the sugery a few weeks ago which went very well. when she came home she was doing well but then she started becoming lethargic again and losing weight. she was down to only 4 lbs. she was also eating and drinking excessively but not gaining weight. i brought her back to the vet and the vet said she didn't really look good and her gums were pale. she did bloodwork and it showed the red blood cell count slightly low and blood sugar slightly elevated but not to the point to be considered diabetic. within the next week she just kept getting worse and when i brouhgt her back they did more bloodwork and it showed she had diabetes. her thyroid level was normal so the surgery was a success. she is now on insulin the brand is Lantus and she gets 2 units in the morning and 2 units at night. she spent quite a bit of time in the hospital, she was there for almost a week to get her blood sugar regulated to know how much insulin to give. she seems to be doing much better than she was. she's more perky and alert and doesn't sleep as much. she's also not drinking and urinating excessivly like she was. she has also gained a couple ounces. she go back to the vet in a month for a recheck.
