New to PZI

Yes I think maybe 60 is too low for some cats? I'm going by his behavior. He has acted more normally when his numbers have been higher. I'm just trying to figure out what is happening with him right now. I contacted the vet just to get another opinion. Maybe something else is going on. Thanks for the reference. I will keep reading and researching.

If he really has just recently started having these lower numbers as it appears he is, then it’s definitely possible that he feels odd/not like himself. I have heard it described as being like a person who is accustomed to drinking a lot of caffeine being suddenly cut off from caffeine. I don’t know that it’s a very good analogy, but it’s food for thought.

I have tested my own cats as low as the mid-40s before.

Still, I am glad you called the vet. If he were my cat, I know that I would get him in for some bloodwork and analyze either examination. I would worry since this is a new behavior.

Can you test him for ketones? Do you have any urine test strips? It’s very unlikely with his BG in the normal range, but I would rule it out.

Yeah I think it's better to be safe. Hopefully they can get me in to see him. I will keep you posted.
Thank you because I am concerned about your boy. He doesn’t have any other medical conditions that we have not talked about does he? No abmormal liver enzymes or anything in past bloodwork? Keep me posted.

No, no other health issues. His last bloodwork was great except for the BG. I tested his urine this am, looked normal. That was my first thought, ketones, but no.

I’m glad you checked ketones. If he checks out okay at the vet, it must just be that he feels weird. I know our moderator Wendy says that Neko would hide in greens and would really be lively in yellows and pinks. Her body was so used to the high sugar.
I hope that’s all it is with Calvin. He hasn’t had much time to adjust yet. Everything happened so quickly. If he’s like my cats, he will perk up at the vet (probably the cortisol and adrenaline.)

Hello, well his blood work is perfect, great news! They would like to do a fasting blood test to determine if he may have a tumor on his pancreas which might be causing the lower BG numbers. (an Insulinoma) I think he might just be trying to adjust to everything as you suggested. I don't think regulation or remission works so fast that he would just magically fall into a perfect level. But just to be on the safe side, I agreed to get the test before doing something like an ultrasound to look for a tumor. I took tomorrow off so that I can monitor his fasting hours to make sure he doesn't drop too low. If all goes well I can get the blood drawn and sent off for testing. It makes sense to me that he is just maybe feeling lousy because of being used to having higher BG numbers. If there is no Insulinoma I will probably work with this theory. While at the vet they took a BG and it was 95. My Libre took the BG at 114. That scares me, because I always assumed a Libre would scan lower than a blood test.

I was going to mention an insulinoma earlier today, but honestly I didn’t want to upset you — and it’s extremely rare so I didn’t think it was a good idea to bring it up. Also, he isn’t going hypo. He isn’t out of normal numbers so I feel like that’s in his favor.

Well let's hope that he doesn't have one. Today was a lot. I hope he doesn't drop too low tomorrow. I need to rule out the tumor. Sorry, what was that last line supposed to say? I don't understand.

I corrected the typo. But what I was saying is that his BG has still been within “normal limits” and if he had an Insulinoma, I would expect him to actually be in hypoglycemic numbers. So I really am back to him feeling really “off” due to his current numbers. I have seen a few cats kind of spontaneously go into remission after a diet change to low carb food.

Insulinoma is rare. I am a worrier, so I always worry. But my rational mind tells me he’s going to be fine. Just keep me posted on how he seems to you clinically.

I forgot to ask you last night, do you think Calvin will drop below 50 during fasting? I was thinking maybe he's been able to stay in the 60s because he eats every couple of hours. I'm worried that I won't be able to get his blood drawn if he drops and I have to feed him to get him back up. This could be problematic. I am planning on feeding him at 6 am to start the process.

It sure does not look like that’s going to be a problem. If he had an insulinoma I don’t think you would have seen those blue numbers like last night. Was he eating during the night when he was in the blue?

How did it go today? How is Calvin? I see the 137 on hos spreadsheet, which is a bit high, but it’s probably from vet stress. His other numbers today were excellent.

Hi, sorry I didn't see your message yesterday. Calvin is sleeping a lot, very lethargic still. His numbers were really good yesterday, pretty good today, although they are now starting to drop a little. I will update before I go to work. I don't know when I will get the results from the blood test back, they didn't know.

Hi, I don't know if they took his temp yesterday, not that I saw. His blood showed no infections. He usually eats about 8 TBSP in day. I don't think he is losing weight, he's 12lbs. He usually eats a squeeze treat every day also. He is acting a little livelier since I came home, he got up to eat, twice, and he's grooming. I hope he starts playing again soon. Maybe he just needs rest while his body tries to get where it needs to be.

Oh, I hope so! I have been worried. I hate not knowing. I hate it when our cats won’t eat. Many times I have had cats who have refused to eat who had a fever — and their white count was “normal”

Well he eats whenever I offer anything so I think he's ok on that front. The lack of energy is a mystery for now. Keep a good thought for us! I hope it doesn't take forever to get the test results.
