New SugarKitties to the Board

but not a new person. I joined FDMB back in 2007 when I adopted a diabetic cat from the vet clinic I worked in. I wasn't very active but learned so much that helped me take care of Woody. Woody passed away this spring and I decided to honor him by adopting another diabetic cat.

Minuit came at the end of July and she has been a little bit of a challenge. She has a lot of attitude and doesn't like to be touched so testing has been a struggle. She did make the switch to canned food very easily and when I was finally able to get a BG, she tested normal. She's slowly losing some much needed weight so hopefully we will be lucky and be able to stayed diet controlled. Because of the difficulty in testing her, I was interested opinions on doing fructosamine or glycosylated hemoglobin periodically to make sure she stays normal.

I am also going to be adding Poughkeepsie, a 10 year old Ragdoll to my family this weekend. Woody was a Ragdoll and I fell in love with the breed so I'm looking forward to meeting Poughkeepsie. He's on Lantus so I am going to be reading up on using it since Woody was on BCP PZI. It sounds like his treatment wasn't ideal so I will be here getting some help to get him regulated.

Welcome back. If BGs are good, I would not do fructosamine or glycosylated hemoglobin tests periodically because of the cost and little new information gained. But, if you cant test, it is better than nothing. However, since it ir gives an average, you will not really know how high or the BGs are going.

if she's impossible to glucose test via a home monitor, then yeah, i'd probably consider one of the other tests periodically or even using something called glucotest i think it is. it's little confetti stuff you put in the litterbox that will change color based on the sugar in the urine if i remember correctly. Roni and Moonie I want to say is an expert on using that stuff. your problem with using that would be having multiple diabetics and unless you see who goes when, you wouldn't be able to tell for sure which one is spilling sugar.

if Minuit is not getting insulin than i don't think knowing what the BG level is at a specific moment in time is as important as when they are getting insulin and are at risk of hypos, etc....

now to Poughkeepsie. thank you so much for taking him. i am out here in california and was approached by the group on facebook to see if i could help in any way with him so had been following his story on facebook and sharing it here and there and all that just praying he was saved, along with the rest of the lady's animals. such a tragedy what happened to her. so thank you. (for others reading, this is the kitty tuckers mom posted about a few days ago viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53114)

as far as his treatment, yeah, when i saw once a day dosing with lantus and regular dry food, my first reaction was that he would probably go into remission too with better dosing and a better diet so i'm keeping my fingers crossed :-)

Ahhhh...so you're taking the Pough-boy !!!

Wonderful.

And welcome back.

If you suspect that Minuet is diet-controlled, and you're not giving insulin, then you
could try the glucotest stuff from Purina.

I don't really like it because it's expensive, a pain to interpret, and other reasons.

But you could confine her to one room for a day every once in a while, with a litter box
and the GlucoTest in the litter. It takes about 30 minutes after the cat has
peed for the color to develop on the pieces of confetti, so you can't read it immediately.
You must start with a clean litter box that has no other pee residue in it.

And once the glucotest has been out of its packet for three days, you must discard it and start over...
uses a lot of litter that way.

Then, at least you would know if her BG has gone up again. It does not tell you
how LOW she is going if she is on insulin.

Welcome! (I'm too new to say 'welcome back')

THERE'S MY BOY!!! Can't wait for Poughkeepsie to arrive!!! Been waiting for you to show up - oh THANK YOU for adopting him....there's something very special about that cat. I truly believe he's still got a mission to accomplish in this world.

Thank you so much for taking Poughkeepsie. :YMHUG: I can't wait to hear more about him.

Thank you for taking Poughkeepsie and giving a forever home. We have been waiting to welcome you and your new sugar baby.
