I can't help with your question on switching insulins, but you might want to get some mid-cycle tests (when possible) to see how low he's dropping.
There was a cat that had numbers like Loki and on a tiny dose of insulin that went into remission when the CG switched to wet food. I know you've been trying hard to transition him. My kitty was a kibble addict as well and I could never get her off it...so I understand your struggle!
