Hi everyone,

Our cat Charlie, who has been with us for 9 years now, was diagnosed on Jan 19th and is taking Senvelgo. We are very aware of the risks and are doing everything to monitor for serious side affects.

We had a good routine going to administer the med (he hates liquid meds), but last night we had an incident that has broken his trust. He had gone to the vet for a follow up. He doesn't like the carrier, but handles it well and is ok after. However, on top of the visit he also has to wear a shirt to cover the libre monitor. The new spot they placed it in seems quite irritating to him.

I couldn't get the shirt on right away and decided to see how he handled it. When he tried biting at the sensor, I just simply put my hand up to block him from doing that without doing anything to push his head away. This caused him to hide under the bed.

After about an hour he came out for food and water, and it was about an hour away from med time. I made the bad decision of closing the bedroom door, which scared him a lot.

We got the shirt on him and med done, but now he hides from me Everytime I go into the bedroom, except at night after we're settled into bed. I don't know how I'm supposed to rebuild his trust when he needs to have his med on time. I don't want to force him out of his safe spot, but he won't respond to treats or catnip because he knows I'll take him after to do the med.

Any know what I can do to make this less stressful so I can rebuild our relationship? I feel so guilty and sad that he can no longer enjoy his usual activities with us.

Hello and welcome. Sorry to hear Charlie has gotten so stressed.

Does he have any particular treats that he likes? Preferably low carb ones. Might be time to put some treats out and then walk away and leave him. Do this at random times. You want to break the association of meds with his treats.

Will he take the Senvelgo mixed in with his food? Or a Churu puddle?

Does Charlie have a tent, or other hidey bed he can go in? Better than under the bed so that you can still reach in. And stuff under the bed with something so he can't get under.

It's a bit unusual to see people using the Libre if they are giving Bexacat or Senvelgo. Are you home testing him for ketones? That's very important in the first few weeks. You can test urine or blood. Tips to catch and test a urine sample. Testing blood might be harder at this point due to his stress. Try just rubbing his ears and giving a treat after for a few days.

Hi, thank you.

He likes the squeeze treats and used to get temptations and greenies. Have yet to find any low carb crunchies he really like. I tried mixing the med in with food, but he didn't go for it. I haven't tried a squeeze treat yet. A little scared to waste a dose since it's so expensive.

We had an ok routine that he was getting used to. I take him into the bathroom for med, give him a few pets after and then treats. This kept him from going under the bed after a couple of days, and he'd resume being his happy self wanting booty pats.

He doesn't use tents or covered beds. He has a little cubby in the closet that he likes to sleep in, and is easy to get to. Before all this he liked sleeping in the back of the chair or on the ottoman 🥺

I've seen quite a few other people using the libre for their cats, but I'm unsure if they were on insulin or an oral med. I think some were also using Senvelgo or Bexacat. Do the ones you know use a regular monitor? I don't think he'd let me prick him for blood...

I have been using some urine testing strips to monitor for ketones. He doesn't like his ears touched and pulls away, so blood testing would be difficult.

I might be making some small strides toward trust again after tonight. About a couple of hours before his med, he did come out for treats and stayed out for a little bit to play. I was thinking what you mentioned about treats throughout the day, so he can differentiate and realize they're not all bad. Still taking other suggestions, it's good to have an arsenal to choose from.

If you want to know more about Senvelgo specifically, we are getting a few people posting now to this forum: Bexacat / Senvelgo. From what I read there, most people seem to be using hand held meters. Typically there isn't as much testing going on as with insulin.

Good for you on urine ketone testing. Ear testing also takes some desensitization and treats to make it work.
