Hi Kevin. If you are going to follow the SLGS method please add that to your signature and spreadsheet up top:cat: Also add what food you are feeding to your signature and after you have started Prozinc on your signature can you put 11-11-24
Hi, Diane!

Thanks for the suggestions! I got everything in except the diet; It told me my signature had too many letters in it.

You know what you can do to fit LC (meaning low carb wet, after you have SLGS method on your signature delete the word method and just put LC
Like SLGS/LC wet if you can't fit wet LC that is good enough. Don't forget to put SLGS on your spreadsheet up top you can even just put Started Prozinc 11-11-24 instead of
Started using ProZinc on 11/11/24
Did I mention don't feed Kit anything 2 hours before taking Kits AMPS or PMPS because you don't what the BG influenced by food

@Kev B
Yes you can start a new thread tomorrow
You can put

Then link this post to your new thread
To link it , give me a minute I'll tell you

To link your previous posts
Your previous days post will always be in the URL all the way up top ignore where it says insert or cancel I'm just trying to show you where your previous days post will be
Just ignore where it says insert and cancel
Just copy your previous days post and then paste it when you do your new post new thread

Like I said
your previous days post it will be the one all the way up top, above the pic of that cat and the picture of a bottle of insulin there, let me know if you understand it
Only way I can explain it lol

His next BG test is at about 6pm, right before I feed him. His next shot will be 2 units at 6:30
With ProZinc, unlike Vetsulin, you can test, feed and shoot the insulin pretty much all at the same time (the whole process doesn’t need to take many minutes). The only time I would recommend waiting for the whole meal to be finished is if you have a cat who is a very poor eater or a cat who vomits all the time. ProZinc takes about 2 hours to onset (begin to lower the BG) so you actually have plenty of time to make sure he eats.

I always recommend a small snack at about +2 anyway (teaspoon or two of low carb wet food) — occasionally cats who onset earlier need a snack a little earlier, but +2 is a good starting place for the first snack of the cycle. Next snack is about +2.

Also, don’t give food after about +6 because feeding after nadir can shorten the duration of the insulin, causing numbers to rise prematurely (we don’t know exactly when his typical nadir is on ProZinc yet, but we will find out.)

Most importantly for now is to not feed for two hours prior to shot time— so that we have a good reliable fasting BG number that is not influenced by food and we can make good dosing decisions.

snacks are at 3pm and 8pm, and is usually freeze-dried chicken treats, a syringe of pedialyte, or a couple (or 3) of temptation treats.
Okay. I assume that the 9 Lives is all low carb. I haven’t checked it, but it’s probably similar to Friskies. That snack os way too late in the cycle and is too high in carbs and will definitely cause higher numbers and shorter duration. Freeze dried chicken treats (like Pure Bites freeze dried chicken treats) are perfect for treats such as the treat that should always be given with every single ear prick. Temptation treats are too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. Pedialyte, that we have already talked about as being high in sugars (dextrose) is not a good choice as it raises BG. I use Pedialyte to raise the BG of fading rescue kittens because their blood glucose drops dangerously.

so it’s important to give small snacks of 1-2 tsp. Low carb wet food (can just be the regular Nine Lives food) during the cycle to smooth the cycle and help prevent steep drops in BG. As I said before, a snack/mini meal at +2 and another at +4 and for some cats a snack at +6 can be helpful. Definitely the +2 and 4 snacks! Many people who are gone during the day use an automatic feeder to dispense these mini-meals at the appropriate time.

Hi, Suzanne!

I just updated his spreadsheet. I've noticed since my last post that he looks a little less energetic than usual and refused the syringe of Pedialyte but ate the treats. That hasn't happened before. I'm trying not to blow every little thing out of proportion, but I will feel better after he eats his dinner. I was able to get his Ketone reading, and it was normal (negative/trace) His next BG test is at about 6pm, right before I feed him. His next shot will be 2 units at 6:30 (he's usually good about them and rarely gives me any trouble). At this stage, I'm not expecting to see major drops, but I still have my hypo kit handy. When do you think I will start seeing changes in his BG levels? I'm not rally expecting anything the first few days, but I am keeping a lookout for any changes in his behavior (like earlier).

I'll test him a couple more times tonight and post them.

Thanks again for helping us!

I totally understand about watching their every move and maybe reading too much into every little detail. I watched Darcy very closely, especially after his DKA. I would only be concerned if you see lethargy (that persists) and vomiting or severe loss of appetite also that persists.

Some cats will behave strangely when they start getting into the more normal healthy BG numbers (the greens and lower blues) and some cats will behave strangely when they are in any numbers lower than those that they’ve been used to for a long time. If a cat has been in red (or black) or pinks and first starts to get into yellow numbers, it may feel very strange and uncomfortable until they become accustomed to it. I just thought I would mention this.

Sorry to interrupt but a lurking question: Is this Prozinc specific or does this apply across the board (for example Glargine?)Asking because it takes me most of a cycle to get his calories into him, especially if I’m giving extra for ketones. And would the answer change if the cat had a later nadir ( say +8 or 9?)

Hi Colleen. The situation can be different for different cats. Your boy, Methos, is a VERY special needs cat with multiple complex issues. While it is generally true that we don’t want the bulk of the calories to be consumed post-nadir (even with glargine) some cats must eat after nadir (although it can affect numbers.) It is recommended to figure out how many calories per day are the optimal amount for your cat. Then divide them up into smaller meals throughout the cycle. If you have a cat who just won’t eat much at any one time, or a cat who is being syringe fed all of their calories (or many of them) you may not be able to get all those calories in during the early portion of the cycle. Obviously, getting adequate nutrition in trumps everything else! Okay?

es. And would the answer change if the cat had a later nadir ( say +8 or 9?)
And yes, to be specific about that — with cats who typically have a late nadir, you can feed them a little later than a cat with an earlier nadir. Right now, I have no information on Kit’s nadir, so we would use +6 as a starting point. The feeding schedules can be revised and customized to the cat’s needs. The main point is that diabetic cats do much better when they’re receiving food in smaller portions rather than feeding just twice a day like most people feed their cats — and you already know that and are doing it.
