With ProZinc, unlike Vetsulin, you can test, feed and shoot the insulin pretty much all at the same time (the whole process doesn’t need to take many minutes). The only time I would recommend waiting for the whole meal to be finished is if you have a cat who is a very poor eater or a cat who vomits all the time. ProZinc takes about 2 hours to onset (begin to lower the BG) so you actually have plenty of time to make sure he eats.
Okay. I assume that the 9 Lives is all low carb. I haven’t checked it, but it’s probably similar to Friskies. That snack os way too late in the cycle and is too high in carbs and will definitely cause higher numbers and shorter duration. Freeze dried chicken treats (like Pure Bites freeze dried chicken treats) are perfect for treats such as the treat that should always be given with every single ear prick. Temptation treats are too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. Pedialyte, that we have already talked about as being high in sugars (dextrose) is not a good choice as it raises BG. I use Pedialyte to raise the BG of fading rescue kittens because their blood glucose drops dangerously.
I totally understand about watching their every move and maybe reading too much into every little detail. I watched Darcy very closely, especially after his DKA. I would only be concerned if you see lethargy (that persists) and vomiting or severe loss of appetite also that persists.
Sorry to interrupt but a lurking question: Is this Prozinc specific or does this apply across the board (for example Glargine?)Asking because it takes me most of a cycle to get his calories into him, especially if I’m giving extra for ketones. And would the answer change if the cat had a later nadir ( say +8 or 9?)
Hi Colleen. The situation can be different for different cats. Your boy, Methos, is a VERY special needs cat with multiple complex issues. While it is generally true that we don’t want the bulk of the calories to be consumed post-nadir (even with glargine) some cats must eat after nadir (although it can affect numbers.) It is recommended to figure out how many calories per day are the optimal amount for your cat. Then divide them up into smaller meals throughout the cycle. If you have a cat who just won’t eat much at any one time, or a cat who is being syringe fed all of their calories (or many of them) you may not be able to get all those calories in during the early portion of the cycle. Obviously, getting adequate nutrition in trumps everything else! Okay?
And yes, to be specific about that — with cats who typically have a late nadir, you can feed them a little later than a cat with an earlier nadir. Right now, I have no information on Kit’s nadir, so we would use +6 as a starting point. The feeding schedules can be revised and customized to the cat’s needs. The main point is that diabetic cats do much better when they’re receiving food in smaller portions rather than feeding just twice a day like most people feed their cats — and you already know that and are doing it.
