Hi everyone! Monica and Bowie (11 yo, female) from the US here. Thank you all for this wealth of knowledge, I've already learned so much from browsing old forum and blog posts!
Bo was recently diagnosed with steroid-induced diabetes, DKA, and severe pancreatitis after I took her into the ER for extreme lethargy and loss of appetite/thirst. She is usually quite healthy except for some allergies, and her condition completely changed overnight. She became so, so sick and there was a period where we weren't sure she would make it. Thankfully, the ER vets got her ketones and blood glucose under control and she is on the mend. She is acting more like her old self, and we are now traversing the wild world of feline diabetes together.
I made my first posts in the Lantus forum yesterday and this morning with more details on Bowie's current state. I'm still figuring out her ideal dosage and am hoping to follow the TR method. Her blood glucose has been low, and I've skipped some shots since she was under 150 and I am still very new. I am testing with a ReliOn Classic Premier monitor.
Bowie is eating Fancy Feast Classic Pate (chicken) and Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals (chicken). She gets a few pieces of freeze dried chicken as a treat.
I co-parent Bowie with my best friend (and former roommate) and we have shared custody and each have her for ~2.5 years. We are coordinating closely on her care and treatment, and she/her husband watches Bowie whenever I'm out of town. I know it sounds crazy, but I promise if you met Bowie you'd understand. She is the sweetest, friendliest cat I have ever met. I've still got another 2 years with Bo and am looking forward to making the most of our time together!
