My name is Audra and my cat's name is Jinx. Jinx is 7yrs old and a male. He also has stomatitis and had most of his teeth removed except the front ones. I took him into the vet because of diarrhea then the vet did blood work. This led to doing a glucose curve. He is currently taking lantus. I am going to get the supplies to start home testing. I have an appointment March 8th with a vet who is more experienced with diabetes. We are also in the process of packing and moving so that probably isn't helping his numbers.

Hello and welcome. Lantus is a good insulin for cats. Can you tell me how much he's getting per shot? Good to hear that you will be home testing, that is the best way to keep him safe. Lots of information in this post to help: Hometesting Links and Tips Once you're comfortable with home testing, you might want to consider switching him to an all low carb wet food diet. But don't switch until you are testing, as diet can make a huge change in insulin requirements.

He's getting 1 unit twice a day. The vet was trying to jump him up to 3 units but I'm waiting to get him seen by a different vet before making any changes. I also want to start home testing before making changes. Thank you. I didn't know about waiting to switch to an all low carb diet until after testing. I'm still trying to learn about all of this.

1 unit is also a good starting dose, but he's sounds like he's been on it for a while. Once you start testing, we can help you with timing and amounts of dose changes too. Going up to 3 units is way too fast!

There is lots to learn at the beginning, but we've all been there and are very happy to help you get up to speed.

Welcome, sorry to hear about poor Jinx but you have found your lifeline here -- without this place I cannot imagine where I would be. Probably committed.

there is much to learn, my Hendrick was just diagnosed 1/5/22 so this is all very new to me as well. Sounds like you're already doing great though to be honest. Hendrick is on Lantus as well and it has helped a ton already, even though we don't have him fully regulated yet.

Thank you. It's so overwhelming. He's my baby so I get overly anxious anyway. I hope the best for you and Hendrick!
