Hello! I have read through so many helpful posts and replies in this forum already and I hope you can help with my question. My cat Triskett was diagnosed in January this year and I have been giving him Lantus since then. When he was first diagnosed my vet said there was no need to do home testing. He has still been losing weight and my vet tells me he is insulin resistant and may be Acro. I have made the decision to start testing him based on all of the information I have read on this forum and also seeing my baby suffer because of this illness.

When I first started the Lantus insulin in January, we started at a dose of .5u ever 12 hours. He is now up to 1.5u every 12 hours and has been for at least 2 months. I have never seen any kind of symptom of hypo with him on this dose and he still continues to have PD and PU. I want to use the SLGS method after I start testing. Would I start with this 1.5u dose since I already know he is doing okay on it or would I drop down to .5u and start from the beginning like the instruction post says?

Thank you for your help and sharing your experience!

He's still on a really low dose. Acro cats are often in doses much much higher. My acro cat was up to 12.5 units twice a day. I think you couldn't possibly say that your cat it's anything more than an unregulated diabetic yet. You may have just not found the right dose. You are probably holding the dose way too long. I'm glad you are going to start testing and following a protocol. Start at the 1.5. I have a video in my signature showing how I tested my cat CC at home.

Thank you SO much for your reply. I actually watched your video before I posted because I was planning on trying our first test tonight. We just did that and even though I failed miserably, he did so great. I made sure he knew it of course

I pretty much figured he was still unregulated because none of his original symptoms have changed, for better or worse.

When you say I've held the dose too long, do you mean that I have had him on the same, ineffective, dose too long?

I can't wait to get this testing thing down so I can finally see him feel better. I'm definitely a data person and this spreadsheet is right up my alley. I'm a worrier and I know seeing the info in writing will help me better adjust his dose.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Great you have the signature and spreadsheet set up and are going to home test.
I would remove the possible Acro from your signature for the moment. I agree with Janet, he is most likely just unregulated.

If you are going to follow the SLGS method, pop that into your signature so we can see please, and start off with the 1.5 dose as Janet suggested.
Hold that dose for 7 days then do a curve. Test before every shot and try and get some mid cycle tests in if you can as Lantus is dosed on the nadir (lowest point of the cycle) not the preshot number.

When you are saying you are feeding a combo diet, what do you mean?
Are you feeding a meal before the dose and giving a couple of snacks during the first half of the cycles?
Have you got your hypo kit set up?
If you post every day, we can help you.
Again welcome!:)

Combo diet here means mostly wet with a portioned amount of dry out all day that my 4 cats share.

I have only been feeding the 2 meals (I was doing the same before he was DX, but less than 12hrs apart) per day and he does snack on dry. I want to phase the dry out completely and start feeding smaller meals or snacks during the day. I work from home so thankfully this isn't a problem. I also wanted to do a homemade food from the recipe calculator on balanceit.com. I have made my cats homemade food before because I have 2 with food sensitivities (including Triskett) and it can be hard to find something that agrees with all of them. When I feed homemade I don't add any supplements and feed half homemade and half commercial at each meal to make sure they get the proper nutrients they need.

I have about half of a hypo kit set up right now. I don't have the extra test straps yet because I just picked up my meter today and walmart only had 1 25ct bottle of strips left. I'll be visiting a different store this week and will get some. I do have honey and HC foods.

Thank you so much for all that you do. I see you mods answering so many posts and I know how time consuming it is. You will definitely be hearing from me again soon! I'm going to try and test again by myself tomorrow. Hopefully I can distract him enough with some treats again. It seems he's always hungry so it's easy enough to put a bit of food out and then do pretty much what I need to.

Hi Rachel,
Have you looked at the frankenprey diet if you do not add supplements.
My concern would be…are they getting enough calcium and taurine.
I feed a raw diet to my cats.
Looking forward to seeing your progress!

After being in the health care field most of my life, one thing I learned is, NOTHING alive stays that way, and there is ALWAYS some sort of change. Any dynamic carbon-based living organism will either succumb to an unbeatable foe or develop a way of coping or BEATING it. I think the vet pulled the trigger too soon on this one. Boy, I hope so. It kills me to hear of, especially to see ANY pet suffer.

I feel ya, and hope you and Triskitt make it through with your treatment and diet. It really hurts to watch our babies suffer.
Sadly, I too have come to the realization my kitty Peanut is diabetic, and has shown moderate signs of neurological problems, and it's KILLING me. So, you're not alone, and there are some pretty empathetic kitty parents on board.
