Hello everyone! My 14 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes 2,5 months ago. We started insulin treatment for about 2 months. We also started feeding the cat with raw meet or canned meet. For raw meet we prepare a mix of different meets + taurin + vitamin B2. The canned meet he receives is from Wild Freedom.
Our vet told us to administer the cat with 1 unit of insulin at 8 AM and at 8PM. The cat seems to be very sensitive to insulin and usually responds well. When the cat has a glicemia below 200 we don’t administer the insulin as the glicemia would decrease very much. But if we don’t administer the insulin it sometimes happens that the glicemia increases at 300 between the insulin shots. What do you advice? Should we administer the insulin in the evening at 8PM even if the glicemia is at 180. We also have a problem- during the day between 9AM and 7PM no one can measure his glicemia.

Welcome to FDMB.

It would be helpful to have a bit more information about you and your cat. I'm guessing that you're not located in the United States. We refer to "glicemia" (glycemia) as either blood glucose or blood sugar. There are several different types of insulin that are used to treat feline diabetes. What insulin has your vet prescribed? We have information available on the insulins that are used that you may find helpful.

It sounds like you have been home testing. We strongly support home testing since it's the best way to make sure your cat is in safe numbers. We suggest that you create a spreadsheet to track your cat's progress. The spreadsheet will allow us to see exactly what you're describing regarding your cat's blood glucose levels. The information on creating a spreadsheet is in this post on helping us to help you. There is also information in the link on setting up your signature. Your signature will provide us with information about your cat (e.g., when your cat was diagnosed, diet, insulin) so we don't keep asking you the same questions.

It's important that you are feeding your cat a low carbohydrate, nutritionally complete diet. If you are feeding your cat a home prepared, raw diet, that's great! However, I'm going to provide a link to a site on feline nutrition that has a recipe for a raw diet. There are a number of supplements that are important to include in order for a raw diet to be nutritionally complete. You will need to check to see if the Wild Freedom is low in carbohydrates. We consider low carb as under 10% but most members here feed their cat a food that is approximately 5% carb.

Many of us work and are out of the house during the day. You may want to consider buying a timed feeder so your cat has food available throughout the day.

Thank you for your reply!
Yes, I am not from United States and English is not my first language.
The insulin we use is Lantus. I will be updating my Spreadsheet and also my signature :)
We have someone that comes to my cat to give food in the afternoon but they cannot measure the blood glucose level. We are considering buying a feeder, I will make another thread about that when I will finish my signature and spreadsheet
