New job, trouble with scheduling, different insulin?

I am using the Lantus SoloStar pen. I am right now feeding Clawdius and giving him his shot (1 unit) every 12 hours. The problem is, I am about to start a job where I will have 12 hour shifts with a 1 hour drive each way. It won't always be that long a drive but right now I am caring for my dad at his home. I will work 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts, then 4 days off. How do I work Clawdie's feedings and shots? I thought about getting an automatic feeder so he (and his brother) can have a snack while I'm gone to tide them over but what do I do about his insulin? There is really no one around here that can do it. Is the 12 hours between shots an absolute?
It was suggested that I ask for help on this forum, maybe think about changing to Prozinc since it doesn't make a depot? I am working on getting him to let me handle his ears so don't have my spreadsheet going yet.

I am really stressing over this and would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

Is anyone on here using Lantus on a 10\14 hr schedule? I am starting a new job with 12 hour shifts and a one hour commute each way so I cannot stay on the 12 hour schedule. I would really like to continue using the Lantus if possible but not if it puts Clawdius at risk.

I responded on one of the previous threads. I explained why using Lantus would be hugely problematic on a 10/14 schedule.
I know but someone else said that they knew someone on here is working with the same schedule I will be and I should ask them about it. During my reading I came across something that said Lantus is active for up to 18 hours but now I can't find it. My faith in my vet tech is a little shaken because she doesn't know what I'm talking about when I mentioned the depot. She has sugarbabies of her own so I assumed she would know. I will pass on to her what I learned from here.

This is from one of your previous threads:
So you'll need to shoot somedays on a 10 hour/14 hour schedule?

It can be done. We have another member using Prozinc @Nicole - Toe's mom with a real wonky schedule.

First and foremost we need to see your spreadsheet and I'd wait for @Deb & Wink to guide you with this one if you do decide to change.

We really need to see some numbers before we can suggest anything. My first thoughts are you might have to let him run a little higher (blue nadirs) for safety and you might need to come up with a bit of a sliding scale for dosing but we won't know until we see your spreadsheet. If you need any help setting it up please let us know!

Here is a link to info on the Lantus depot, though from what @Sienne and Gabby (GA) and @Shelley & Jess are saying, you're better off not using Lantus and switching to Prozinc. If you need help setting up a spreadsheet, please let us know. @Bandit's Mom can help you do that.

Shooting early can act like an increase with lantus and shooting late like a decrease. There can be some overlap but 18 hour shots are only given once in a great while due to circumstances when you can’t shoot at 12 hours. I did it once when I had to take my mom to to the ER. It really set Max back and if I needed to be away I would have skipped instead. Please check out Prozinc.

So sorry, it wasn't someone on Lantus that has a 10/14 schedule but Prozinc. My vet doesn't know anything about Prozinc but they are researching. My head is so full of info that I am mixing things up. I have started a binder to organize and keep everything straight. Thanks everyone.
