OK. We think he finished about 5:10 or so. Could have been 5. It’s getting a little surreal around here. So, we have a timer going now that will go off in 15 minutes for testing. Then we set again for 30?
Depending on what the BG is. If he is not dropping, I think you could wait an hour next time.
What do you think Suzanne? Would you rather do 30?

It does my head in to try to figure out what happened. She definitely dosed him based on his weight, plus she used a U40 syringe. She told us to dose him 1.5 units on the U40.
She needs to have a conversion chart handy so that she can see that if you give a dose of insulin with the U40 syringe….it translates to a bigger dose when using Lantus. That is because Lantus is a U100 insulin and needs a U100 syringe, and the U40 syringes are used for U40 insulins….if that makes sense.

It does make sense. I guess what confuses me is the fact that 1. she wasn’t planning on giving him .5 units at all but she was factoring in his weight somehow 2. She thought that all units were the same on all syringes? I don’t know. Foggy brain.

Do you know where I could find a conversion chart to send her so she never does this again to anyone ever?

Here is the conversion chart for U40 syringes/U100 syringes

Oh my goodness! What an odyssey! Congratulations. Now one more hour with no food. Another test in an hour?
YaY!!! It will be a happy and optimistic hour, despite the fact that he is headed back to his unhealthy opposite of last night. This is all so weird and surreal and crazy. I WILL dream of wet food and honey syringes, unfortunately. I smell of it too. The vet has just texted me to ask “how was it for the last few readings.” The irony. I don’t even know what to tell her. I’m too tired to say much, but its my chance I suppose…

I have to go out now to collect kids from school ,,who have been on a camp for the week. I will have my phone and will look in.
Test again in one hour and if the BG is still going up …that should be 2 hours since the last food…yes? Then it should be Ok to stop testing.

I told it like it was. I didn’t explicitly lay the blame, but she knows she overdosed him. I said “It was a serious roller coaster the whole night. We have not slept yet. But he is, at last, it seems, out of the woods and stabilized, only since an hour or so ago. He got as low as 3.6. We kept giving him honey and food. We had the good advice of friends who have been through this before and stayed up with us all night.” Then I sent her the curve from the Libre. I bet she will say we should have called her and brought him in. I am rather furious and yet I can use this as an opportunity to help future cats in her care. She is teachable, but I don’t trust her with the life of my kitty. If I have to use her for insulin and syringes etc, I guess I will. I don’t know. I’ll think about it more later I guess.

One question is will all this sugar in his system make his “normal” high BG way too high to be healthy? Or will it all get eaten up by his body and he will be back to what he was the day before yesterday?

I don’t think I will come anywhere near insulin until next week. Especially since we have to get the correct syringes still.

He should go back to his normal state, which is too high at the moment within several hours. The sugar will probably make him feel yuk for a day maybe but he will be fine.

Good morning Jill, you have done a fantastic job with Merlin.
Great to see his numbers back to his normal, high i know but his normal.
You need sleep.
Great job Suzanne and Bron.
If he's hungry then yes feed him LC.
Ok. Suzanne and Bron said they’d be back to check the number, but I am crashing fast… I will feed Merlin and the gang and then I will sleep! Do you think someone should check his BG hourly? My husband John can do that, if so. Nite nite Suzanne! Bye Bron! Bye Teetee! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

As far as not giving him insulin for the week until you get some correct syringes…..I would try and source them earlier if you can. It is not a good idea to let a diabetic cat go without insulin, there is always the risk of ketones developing.
So what I would do is try and get the correct syringes …the U100 3/10 30 or 31 gauge 6 or 8 mm 1/2 unit syringes if you can asap.
In the meantime I would go out and buy a bottle of Ketostix or Dia-ketostix from a pharmacy that sells diabetic supplies and test Merlin’s urine for ketones daily…….this is an insurance against the ketones forming. Also make sure he eats well and if he goes off his food, or gets lethargic, that can be a sign of ketones.
If you can’t buy the syringes In Ireland…and I’m sure should be able to…..I will post a link to a place in the England that will post them to you
This is the link and these are the syringes you need https://hyperdrug.co.uk/bd-microfine-insulin-syringes-0-3ml-pack-of-100/

Go to sleep Jill, you've earned it.
John can check him hourly if he wants after all it's easy to do, sleeeeeeeeeep.

That’s exactly what I use and sent those by email to Jill. Hopefully when they see photos in pharmacy they will know and say they have them!!!

Appreciate you didn’t post Kyle, although I know it is tempting, but in situations like this we need to keep on message and not let the CG or the helpers get distracted.

yep that was my thinking. I did not have anything to offer anyway other than moral support of which there was plenty

and as it was, the thread was tough to follow sometimes with so many posts in quick succession. You all deserve awards or something, what a crazy crazy situation. It is hard to believe a vet could make that mistake.

And should we feed him LC? He’s amazingly hungry after all that.

I was kind of wondering all day long yesterday how many people were watching the incredible marathon. I never thought, when Bron had to go away for a few hours, that we would still be hard at it when she came back. Kudos to @Teetee (UK) and @Bron and Sheba (GA) and most especially @Merlin’sMama and her family! I’ll look for a fresh post to May 19!
