That's good. Just keep testing every 20-30 minutes. Honey acts quickly and doesn't last as long as food so the combo is good. But he's still in safe numbers. Just to put it in perspective. If you put that 9.4 on your spreadsheet, it would be in the blue area of your spreadsheet. You can see that it is not close to hypo territory (not even green).

Don't feel badly. The first time my cat dropped into green, I fed him an entire can of Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers food. Luckily he was very hungry and at the whole thing and still wanted more later.

So we are just making sure it doesn’t drop more? Below what number?

How Many carbs in Felix?
Jill says this is the Felix she has at home.
These are the figures i got from the purina site @Bron and Sheba (GA) for the Felix original in gravy.

If it was 1.5 units on a U-40 syringe, that's equivalent to 3.75 units of Lantus, right everybody? Isn't that what we saw on the charts that @Teetee (UK) posted above?
My chart says 1.5 with a U40 syringe is 3.8 units with a U100 syringe, which is the same thing.

When should I test again?
Test 20 minutes after the last food.

So we are just making sure it doesn’t drop more? Below what number?
Jill the BG could drop further, but that doesn't mean Merlin isn't safe. When a kitty is given too much insulin the nadir and the duration is usually longer than a normal cycle so we need to expect that. He is not dropping fast and you are doing a great job with keeping him safe.

Ok. How do I know when it’s fast? When do I need to go to the vets?

I thought we had agreed on a .5 units starting dose? Anyway, the vet did not agree obviously and doesn't seem to know the difference between a U40 insulin and a U100 insulin.
The starting should have been 0.5 units and none of this would have happened. I am amazed that the vet would make such a basic mistake with the syringes. I don't think she knows much about feline diabetes.

Also do I need to source the right size syringes now? Will we need to dose him tonight? Pharmacies close at 5 here, and a lot of times they won’t give you things without a px.

Yes. I would get U-100 syringes if you can. Can you call a pharmacy and ask for them and then get them to call the vet for authorization.

Yes. She told me .5 unit back when it was going to be Caninsulin. I checked again recently and she said .5. Today she said 1.5 because it’s a different insulin. I should have stopped her right there. The only other syringe she had was u20.

If you look at the first two hours of the cycle, the BG dropped quite fast but then it slowed right down and has just been a steady drop since then.
Cats are safe in numbers 50 and over which is 2.8 in world numbers.
We have had cats drop lower than that and they have been brought back up into higher numbers with some high carb food or honey /karo

Will we need to dose him tonight?
It depends on how he goes during this cycle. You will need to post and ask for advice on that.

I’m very tempted to tell the vet what’s going on. That she overdosed him. That we need different syringes asap.
Absolutely you need to tell her what happened and why. She needs to know what she did wrong so she doesn't do it again. She needs to learn what syringes to use with what insulin ....otherwise the mistake could be lethal next time

Preshot 26.1 (470)
+1 18 (324)
+2 11 (198)
+3 11.4 (205)
+3.5 10.2 (183)
+?4 9.4 (169)
+4.4 9.3 (167)

So he's slowed right down with the food. So you can see how you can manage a drop with the right type of food if you need to.
Let's see how he is in 30 minutes.

If I tell her now she will want me to bring him in and put him on a drip. She is asking me to update her on his numbers every two hours. Her plan was to keep him there for at least two hours after the shot. She is concerned, but not very knowledgeable.

I wouldn't tell her now. He doesn't need a drip at this point. Tell her after the event. You have your hands full at the moment keeping Merlin safe,.
I agree she isn't very knowledgeable.

You 100% need the u100 syringes Jill.
Over here you don't need a prescription to buy syringes, hopefully the same in Ireland.
Obviously you've got your hands full at the moment but Merlin is in safe numbers at 11, what i would do if i were you is have a ring around a few pharmacies to see if they stock u100 insulin syringes. You cannot use the u40 syringes.

You can probably go to every 30 minutes for now. If he wants it, he can lick a little gravy. He hasn't reached the typical nadir hour yet (although every cat is different) and still will likely go down. So far you are doing a great job.

Having trouble finding a syringe called u100, but John has found some syringes that are 1ml with 100 units/markings on them. They just call them 1 ml syringes. Would these work?

The U 100 3/10 syringes are better than the 1 ml U100 syringes as they are smaller and are easier to give smaller doses with. I would keep looking. Maybe look online.
Also any you buy I would recommend posting a photo of them before using them so we can check they are OK.

I have found this Jill about converting u100 syringes to millilitres and according to that you couldn't measure the amount of insulin Merlin would need.
It says One unit of U-100 insulin is 0.01 ml in a regular syringe, so it would be impossible to draw .05 unit let alone 1 unit.

I don't think Jill should be trying to use any other syringes except the U100 3/10 syringes I mentioned above. I would keep looking for them. If Lantus is available in Ireland I think they should have the U100 3/10 syringes somewhere. otherwise they can be bought in England.

I totally agree Bron.
I was just trying to explain that using the 1ml syringes would be impossible to use on Merlin.

Is there a vet-friendly info sheet I could send the vet about dosing Lantus that mentions the type of syringe? I may need her to order them.
