Yes, the laws have change since around 2000. It’s still kind of hellish, but I have done it twice! Once with one cat, last time with three! Nightmare to plan. Expensive. Stressful. But here they are. They are our beloved family.
You have three cats now with you? What are there names (besides Merlin.)

I have only one strip left for the contour, which takes less blood. I can use that, or try for the big blood sucker I couldn’t get to work before. The Glucomen.

So, if this was the correct dosage, his bg would have gone down slower and not so low, right? I’m going to suffer from ptsd from this, but I do want to do this right and help my boy feel better.

Well, I do believe that if we had started today with only .5 units of insulin (using the U-100 syringe) that this would not have happened. I think you may have seen a modest decrease in his blood glucose, but every cat is different and you may not have seen much difference at all. Sometimes it takes a few days to see some decreasing BG from insulin. This has been the longest lasting potential hypo I have ever seen.

I can't answer that one Jill with it being Lantus as i don't know enough about it or if it involves a curve with it being a depot insulin.

Well, you're not up for more reading now, but there are sticky notes on the Board about the insulin depot. Lantus is a depot insulin. It normally takes a few days to build up a depot of insulin. Having a depot of insulin can give nice flat cycles.

Now, every cat will respond differently to insulin... that's why we start at a nice low dose. It's all about keeping them safe.

Now, really, I think it's safe to even wait an hour to test... but since all you have to do is scan the Libre, I'd be interested to see where he is in 30 minutes and then 60 minutes, which is the "end" of the 12 hour cycle. Then you can scan him tonight as much as you want to and enter numbers into your SS.

Do you think I will need to stay up all night?
No. I think he's going to go up pretty high. But honestly, I can understand it if you feel nervous about the whole thing and want to scan him a few times! Let's make sure and scan him some more. But you can relax in between (if you can).

Ok. I’ll scan at 930 and 10. Then I might relax a wee bit…. At this stage, is there any chance it could go back down? I’m still on edge.

I do not believe it could go back down. Let's wait and see. And yes, you'll be ready to relax for sure. What have the other two cats been doing all this time you've been giving Merlin all this FOOD?

The thing is, if he had been on the Lantus for a longer time and he had a depot of insulin built up, then I would be concerned that this could go on for longer because the depot can influence future cycles beyond just one 12 hour cycle. But since he's only had one dose... I think you're okay. We will know soon. He hasn't had time to build up much of a depot of insulin yet. Another good reason to not give insulin tonight and to let him settle back down (or up!) Then you can start fresh when you can get the syringes (or get help with the conversion for a couple of days.)

Also wondering, since he’s asking for food (!) should I keep with the high carb or switch to low now?
Wow. He's amazing. He wants food? Well I would only feed him LC now because we really want to know how he's doing without the influence of high carb food. Honestly, I was hoping he was done with food so we could just test and see how he was doing after the food wore off. Do you think maybe you can just give him a little LC and get away with it?

They’re super jealous. Fancy feast was their favorite. I’ve been saving it for a special occasion like this. But if I give it to them now. They’ll never go back to that Irish yucky stuff. Ooona is suffering from crunchy withdrawal too. Poor dears. Merlin gets all the good stuff.

I don't think his will go back down now at AM+11, at least i hope not. You may get a bounce from Merlin due to him not being used to those lower numbers.
I would wait 1/2 until the next test before feeding him and depending on the numbers go from there.

Aaaw. I wish I could ship them some Fancy Feast!

Yes. We really want to stall feeding him if you haven't already... otherwise quit feeding him and then test more a little after (at least an hour) after he eats. The sooner he stops eating and you can scan his Libre... the sooner you will be "off duty" and can eventually go to bed.

Yes. I’ll just give him a little taste of the old bland crap.

I’ll stall feeding him. I think he’ll survive without food for a whole hour. When should I feed again though? When he’s back up to his usual high?
