Need opinion about syringes...

This is not to deliver insulin but buprenex. I got buprenex(dose 20 units) in 50 unit U100 syringes predrawn from the vet= VERY expensive. This last time they gave me the ampule to draw myself. I have left over U100 syringes from Spunky but they are 30 unit ones. The dose is 20 units...I'm just nervous cause the syringe diameter doesn't look that different. As long as it is U100 20 units is 20 units right? I'm being cautious....

whoa! can you hold off on giving any for a bit? that sounds like a whole lotta bupe compared to what i'm used to giving. let me see if i can find someone who knows for sure
 
I've only ever given 1.5 units of bupe at a time. I've never seen someone give a dose over 2.5u. It sounds like an awful lot to me too.
 
Hey Jen.. we talking bupe for a cat? Dosing is generally done in a tuberculin syringe.. in fractions of 1mL. For instance a common dose would be .1 mL - I don't know how to convert that to units without screwing up..
 
First, forgot to answer your question: yes 20 u100 units is 20 u100 units..

as far as the conversion, I googled it: Insulin units would be 100 units to 1 ml


which means to me that your dose is .2mL and totally doable.

ah, that makes sense then..... I was remembering the units of measurement on the syringe wrong. Good to know! ohmygod_smile

i went and got my syringes of bupe and yeah, they are much fatter than insulin syringes and yeah, i can see where the .2mL mark on them would probably fill up an insulin syringe to the 20unit mark
 
Bless you everyone...where do you get your bup?

This is expensive...even for my vet to get it through the clinic..she did have a local pharmacy with it cheaper but they are currently out. Thanks again!

I can be given orally, with a 1ml TB syringe and the needle removed after drawing the
bupe out of the vial.

Or it can be given by injection.

Call around your local pharmacies. If you have an empty vial, get the NDC number off it. Or ask your
vet. I can almost guarantee it will not be stocked.

The NDC number I have on a 1ml cartridge from Hospira is 0509-2012-32.
It is also made by Bedford Labs in 1ml vials.

I hate to tell you this, but as a controlled substance (synthetic narcotic), you will have
difficulty. I finally got it through WalMart, but sometimes my order would be delayed for several
weeks, due to 'not available' from the mfg.

You must be persistent and do a lot of calling around. I don't know of any on-line sources.

As a class-three controlled substance, you must submit your Rx in person and pick up
the medicine in person.

I had my vet write the Rx for quantity 20 1ml vials....'prn'. That means I can fill it 'as needed'.
When I learned how difficult it was to get, I would place a new order as soon as I picked up the
current order. Even then, sometimes I would wait weeks, or only get 1/2 of an order.
