Good job Liz!! You just posted your first thread!!
As we've discussed some, since you were changing George's dose all the time (because your vet had you doing sliding scale), you weren't using Lantus the best way. It takes consistency in dosing. I see absolutely no reason to think you were giving "too much"!
Since George is running pretty high, I'd suggest you do the dosing method we call "Tight Regulation". You test more than often enough to use TR.
The benefit of TR is that you can increase the dose as often as every 6 cycles (3 days) if it's not getting you where you want him. You do need to test often on TR but you're already doing that.
There's another dosing method we can use with Lantus called Start Low, Go Slow but with that, you hold the dose 7 days before increasing. You don't have to test quite as often with SLGS.
You don't need to make any decision right this moment though so don't worry about it. Here's the info on
Dosing methods using Lantus
I would hold the 1.5U dose for 2 more cycles and if we don't see anything crazy, you could go up to either 1.75 or 2U tomorrow night.
I know you told me you are testing for ketones, so please be sure to do that at least once a day while he's running this high or if he starts to act like he doesn't feel good in any way (not eating hiding, lethargic, etc.)
Hopefully you'll hear from some others soon too. I want you to see how much great help you can get here!
