This past Wed, my cat had his first appointment since week one of his diagnosis. Simon is recently in a tenuous remission (gave him a drop the other day due to a high pre shot number but he seems to do better with food than with insulin so back to no shot) and I decided to print out ALL of his spreadsheets for the last 7 months of data and bring them with me to the appt. My vet FREAKED out when he saw them and all of the work we put into this and the information he could get from this. He then sent me the following e-mail which I received yesterday and I posted it on the PZI boards but it was suggested I share it here with all of you! See below!

Joyce-
I was sitting down having a cup of coffee and decided to peruse Simon's spreadsheets that you left for me when he came in on Wed. last. I have to tell you that I am duly impressed with all that you have accomplished these last several months without any guidance from me. I do not see a lot of cats with feline diabetes and frankly I do not have as much experience as I would like with this.

I knew you were home-testing as your husband told Janis when he came in to pick up the insulin but I had no idea that you were doing so much work with this spreadsheet and watching for spikes and drops and dosing accordingly. I am so impressed!

You mentioned the feline diabetes message board as a place you got information and help with this and I wanted to ask you for the link so I can make sure any newly diagnosed patients have access to this because what you did is so truly amazing. I am really very happy that Simon is doing so very well. Please keep up the great work and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Sincerely,
Dr. K

That's awesome, Joyce!
I can't wait to see the first new member who posts here and says "My vet told me to come here for help" :-)

Kudos to your Joyce! All that testing not only gave you the information you needed to help out Simon, but got your vet to ask where you got all that great advice.

Now, when all the new people show up here, we'll be sure to PM you, so you can give them a nice big FDMB family welcome. :-D

To ALL newly diagnosed families...FD is NOT a death sentence
It DOES get easier
You CAN do this!
There ARE people here that will help
You HAVE found the right place.
WELCOME!

The day Dusty was Dx my Vet gave me a bunch of printouts and links to this message board, so "My vet told me to come here for help" and it was a lifesaver!

That is a great email. It takes a very secure person to admit that he doesn't know everything and is willing to learn. Congrats! You done good and now more cats that come into his office with FD will be better served and helped because of you!

Did your vet tell you how he found out about the board?

I agree Hillary! I was really shocked at his reaction when I was there on Wed as I was not sure what he would say when he saw that I dosed him "my/our" way instead of just following his dose all of the time. But, I was secure enough to give the spread-sheets to him because of the outcome since Simon is doing so well.

The e-mail blew my mind to tell you the truth. I thought that it showed that he is most definitely willing to learn and he was not afraid to tell me he did not know that much about feline diabetes. I was and am thrilled about this. He is a very good vet so now he is even better in my eyes.

High five to this community!

And NO, FD is NOT a death sentence! Not if you are willing to give home testing and working with your cat a chance. It works!

You did good, Joyce! So did your vet! Congratulations to both of you. Delighted! I'll try to hold back some thunder I toss at vets!
Best wishes,
Sophie

Wow! That is a great email from your vet. :-D
So many of them seem to be close minded. If only we could open all of their minds.

Oh, I love that response from your vet! (And of course, well done to you! :thumbup .)

Alas, a good many vets are a bit touchy about us lay people airing our hard-earned knowledge and experience. They like to protect their patch, or feel threatened when faced with people who just might know more about something than they do.
They are, after all, generalists and can't be expected to know every aspect of veterinary medicine in as much detail as those who study it and experiment as intelligently and knowledgeably as the people on this Board. All the accumulated wealth of knowledge here is truly fantastic, so here's hoping your vet will refer patients to the FDMB and come here himself!

No she didn't but you can tell it was standard procedure to give newly diagnosed patients all the info and links to this message board. Either she did a search and found it or a patient told her about it. :-D

I guess there are some vets that think getting help elsewhere means you won't go to the vet for help. And that thinking can't be farther from the truth. It's so important to have a vet working in partnership with you, understanding what you are doing and why and being supportive to be able to help you when needed.

I have had good and bad vet experiences and it's nice to see this.

Joyce,
I already knew that you were AWESOME!! I have always been soooo impressed with all you have accomplished with Simon!! Not to mention all the help and encouragement you have given to me and Chicken. That was a really nice email that your vet sent to you. Simon is truly in some good hands with you as his mama bean and a vet like that!!

Thanks everyone! I was truly thrilled that he is not only on board with using this site, but he wants others to use it too. He very well may come here himself. I told him that we would love it if he would and that I know that without the help of this community, I would not have had the success with Simon that I have had. I mean that with all of my heart.

So many "scary" days in the beginning when I first had to test and then the first "fur shot" and knowing not to shoot again and other VERY important moments. My first "low number" and how scared I was the first time I shot under 200. ohmygod_smile

Now, we are enjoying the fruits of "our" labor because many of you helped us to get here, particularly Sue who was there with us from day one and answered any and all questions for me.

You all rock! You really make a HUGE difference in so many cat family lives. HUGE HUGE difference. Without you, I would have been so lost.

Thank you my dear friends. Happy Holidays to all of you! xoxo

hello everyone:
i was wondering if there is anyone in my area that would be able to come to the house and help me with miss kitties testing? it doesnt seem to be going well. since shes already diagnosed with neuropathy, im not going to test her paws/pads. ive tried the ear about four times with no avail. thanks a bunch! denise and miss kitty

That is a fabulous email you received Joyce! What a success story. My vet seemed more inclined that I home test just so she didn't have to deal with my hell cat Mego while he was at the vet. I hope so many more people will be able to benefit from the life saving world of FDMB! Thanks for sharing your convert story!
