Yesterday I had to take Musette back into the hospital for another extended stay. But this time she is with her regular vet as I wasn't at all pleased of the way both she and I were treated at the ER vet. (long story). I took her back in because right after we got home from her recheck at the ER vet she literally took a downward spiral, to the point that I really was beginning to question if she was just giving up and done with the fight.

She was laying flat on her side, mouth open and eyes just staring off into space. She wouldn't even acknowledge the sound of my voice, it scared me to death. So after speaking, okay bawling to Venita we agreed to take her back to my regular vet and have them rerun her bloodwork and do some xrays to see if they could get her back on the right track. At thos point I haven't gotten any real news from my vet but will be calling them later in the day to see what they have figured out...but when Dr. Rick went over the labs and records from the ER vet he is as confused as I am about why Musette crashed like she did...He doesn't believe that she was in DKA, pancreatis yes, DKA no...but exactly what is causing her not to eat on her own and what is going on with her liver we won't know until the new bloodwork is back in.

So for now she is back in the hospital for an extended stay, they have her hooked back up to IVs and are trying to get her stable enough to come home again. But just seeing the difference in how she responded to Dr. Rick as opposed to the ER Vet makes me believe she is absolutely where she needs to be right now...With the ER vet on her recheck she was growling and trying to bite at him, which is completely unlike my sweet Musette. Yesterday with Dr. Rick as weak as she was she was trying to stand and rub against his hand and even gave him a very weak little normal purr. She felt safe with him where she was clearly terrified of the ER vet.

Re: Musette back in the Hospital

Just got home from visiting her and OMG the difference in less than 24 hours...the jauntice is almost completely GONE! Her ears are white again, her eyes blue, and her gums pink, there is still a very slight yellow tinge to her skin if you part her fur but other than that you would never known that when I took her in yesterday she still looked like a Banana.

She is still very weak, but got mad at her IV line for getting in her way when she tried to walk over to me to be petted and even purred her normal purr for me while I scritched her ears and cheeks. I've got a copy of her latest bloodwork which I'm going to post on health and see if someone can make sense of it for me...lots of stuff out of range either high or low. So not sure what it all means but the Vet should be calling me back this afternoon to explain how what they think is wrong with her differs for what the ER Vet thought was wrong...but judging by what my eyes tell me. her regular vet is way more on track than the After-hours vet...plus I gotmy vet's personal cell phone numbers and told that if this ever happens again to any of my critters to call them and they will meet me at the clinic. <big sigh of relief> I think my fluffy girl is on the mend finally.

Re: Musette back in the Hospital

Whew! Musette is really giving you a workout these last few weeks! Not really a BG roller coaster but certainly hitting the highs and lows for it.

At least the vet is understanding and sounds like he has the ability to think things over and Musette likes him.

Good thoughts to you both!

Re: Musette back in the Hospital

I like your second post better than the first one.

SO glad Musette is feeling better! Sending healing vibes your way!

Re: Musette back in the Hospital

That does sound much more positive! Still sending healing thoughts her way.

(Vicky, lol) If anyone could get a secret cell phone number, it would be the vixen, Musette

Musette never was in DKA what is going on with her is her RBC has been dropping like a stone and the ER vet never caught it...What my vet suspects is wrong with her is Hemobartonellosis a.k.a. Feline Infectious Anemia and is waiting to see what kind of inclusions were seen in her RBC. Which will tell her one way or another if that is what we are working with, they have started her on pred, as well as they are crecking their donor cats to see if they have one that will match up with Musette if they need to do a transfusion. But somehow the A-hole at the ER vet missed that her RBC went from 38 to 24 to 18 in a two week span of time...an RBC of 10 is needed to sustain life, so she is still extremely critical at the moment. But at least right now she is trying to make more red blood cells and is holding steady with a RBC of 18.4, so now it is just finding the cause of the anemia and getting it to reverse itself..

No wonder the little girl is so weak, and stopped eating her little body gave her a choice, eat or breathe, and she chose breathing. We still aren't 100% that we are going to pull her out of this and we still may have to make that heart-wretching final decision for her, but at least now she has a fighting chance to pull through, but I so regret the time that was wasted with her at the other vet. How can you look at a blood panel and not see a RBC plunging into the basement? I'm absolutely fuming.

Poor little thing. At least you are getting closer to the correct answer.

Sending prayers that this can be turned around and she will be ok. Come on, Musette, hang in there. Help is coming!
