Murphy Constipation

Well, last week, she had an enema, which took her about a day to get over. I heard her straining and a little whine this p.m. at the litter box trying to poo, so as much as I hate to say it, I think she's got a GI issue and constipation. I have been using lactulose, but I'm wondering if her diet is going to need to be switched a little. I was using the pure pysllium husk, but it is bulk forming, and the miralax just didn't do the trick. The psyllium doesn't put water into the gut (osmotic). Any ideas? I would like to find a good high protein, low carb, yet high fiber diet, but i'm thinking there isn't such a thing out there. Help -- before we end up with another problem.

How much water are you adding to the foods? I add Restoralax in Ollie's foods but I then add lots of water and it's just a bowl of soupy slop. If you are not adding enough water to the foods, you will have problems.

We add 2 or 3 tablespoons of water to our cats food too. It is soupy, but it is really the only way they get water. Cats are desert creatures and usually wont got to the water bowl unless they have health issues like FD. Even then they need the extra water in their food.

What is Restoralax? Never heard of it? Is it the same as Miralax?

It is the same thing as Miralax. It is sold under different brand names in Canada. The Miralax works well for my cats. I give 1/4 to 1/8 tsp twice daily. I dilute it in water then add it to food. It can't be given once the cat is already blocked up with feces and is unable to pass stool. In that case an enema is needed. I give it daily as a preventative.

I have used high carb diets (usually marketed as a veterinary fiber formula food), but they are very high carb and probably not suitable for diabetics. Some people have success with adding plain canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie filling) to food.

Any chance of trying a raw diet? There are a number of distributor's in California. Their link is in my signature. Look for resellers at the bottom of their web page.

We can't change her diet at this time, because we're hopeful that she will continue to produce her own insulin, so that's a no go with her and I'm not going to throw her into a situation that could affect her pancreatisis, etc. I've given her two mls lactulose Thursday, Friday twice, and today will be twice. I would think she would have had a BM by now. Otherwise, if not tonight, I will have to take her in tomorrow.

Boo, poor wittle girl.
